The WNBA is 30-years-old, and for 29 of those years, almost nobody knew it existed.
Its cultural relevance was so low that even women’s soccer, if you can believe it, generated more interest than it did, and I can’t say I had heard of women’s professional soccer until an under-15 boys’ high school soccer team beat the US national team in a match by 5-2.
I guess that put them on the map. Not the boys. The US national team. Not in a good way, but at least we became aware of their existence.
I don’t bring this up because I don’t think that women’s athletics is a joke. Only SOME women’s athletics are a joke, and only because people are pretending that women and men are athletic in the same basic ways. But the truth is that men and women are different, and most of the sports we watch are driven by the kind of athletic achievements that are the province of men for the most part.
But figure skating? Women are much more interesting. Tennis? Men’s tennis and women’s tennis are different games, really, and they are interesting in their own ways.
But nobody wants to watch women play flag football, and outside of Caitlin Clark and perhaps another player or two, the athleticism of women playing basketball is just not interesting enough to watch for most people.
Still, the WNBA has suddenly become culturally relevant, mostly because it is where several of the pathologies plaguing our society are being played out before our eyes.
Racism, alphabet ideology, pathological tribalism, and the most toxic aspects of femininity have come to dominate our cultural discourse and are on display in the WNBA.
Both Ed and I have already written about the WNBA today, which tells you something, and it’s not that we are looking for clicks. Neither of us does clickbait because it is not in our nature; frankly, we do not have to. We have readers who are interested in our takes on the issues of the day (THANK YOU!).
We write about what interests us, and the WNBA is interesting because it is where the culturally sane are now fighting back against the hysterical wokeness that is eroding our culture.

Prior to Sophie Cunningham casually mentioning, without rancor, that she thinks women and girls deserve their own spaces, the WNBA was only interesting because the league sided with angry black lesbians when they beat up on Caitlin Clark. It was an example of a cultural sickness, but none of us expected that it would become the venue where one of the most important culture wars would be fought.
It was just one more place where the insane ruled, and an example we could point to in order to make our point.

But the backlash to Sophie’s comment among WNBA leadership created an opening that Enes Kantor Freedom and Royce White, along with a growing list of other prominent figures, are driving right through. Since the WNBA leadership chastised Cunningham and turned her and her supporters into villains for stating the obvious, Freedom and White are making them put their money where their mouths are.

The WNBA and alphabet ideologues are trying to denigrate Freedom and White as being “fake” transgender cosplayers, but the problem is that they also believe that there are “real” transgender “women,” and the only definition they can give is that they believe they are women.

They assert there is no objective standard, so there is no objective standard to which they can appeal to assert that these “women” are in fact men. They just assert it, just as Kantor and Freedom assert that they are women. It is a standoff, and one where the WNBA has no ground to stand on once it abandons biology.

The achievement here is opening the Overton Window. Until now, people in the sports world were too intimidated by the alphabet people and the woke sports media to challenge the idiocy of the trans movement. So were most people in power, which is why rapists have been incarcerated with real women.
They would rather allow evil to happen than face the opprobrium. Freedom and White broke the taboo.

If you let her go into the stands and have an altercation with someone (Enes Kanter Freedom) over a T-shirt, without any repercussions, there is no deterrent, or penalty!
As soon as Freedom and White challenged the WNBA’s unwillingness to define what a woman was, the league was put in an untenable position. They called a meeting to discuss the issue, and in a league where the absolute rule is that only women can participate, they couldn’t even agree on what a woman is.
It’s absurd, but until these bold, beautiful “women” challenged them, they could embrace the absurdity.
No longer.
Freedom and White are taking their lumps like men and are assuming the role of sports JK Rowling. They are willing to take the barbs and insults because they are doing the right thing, and in doing so have made the WNBA culturally relevant for the first time ever.
Good for them.
