Hearing is important. While people have learned to adapt to life without it, they’ve also learned to adapt to living without being able to move any of their limbs. That doesn’t mean mobility is irrelevant. Yet, despite there being a century-old device that can protect that hearing, a group of doctors in California would much rather their patients go deaf than own a suppressor.
I honestly wish I was making this up, but I’m not.
The California Medical Association would rather support gun control than, you know, actual health.
Suppressors remain prohibited in Hawaii, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Delaware, and the District of Columbia and, of course, California.
These deep blue states are apparently worried that hitmen, assassins or gangsters may go to a gun store, choose a suppressor, fill out the federal paperwork accurately—including their full name, address and other personal identifiers—wait until their suppressor purchase is approved, return to the gun store, pick it up and then sally forth and commit armed, albeit quieter, mayhem.
Timothy Wheeler, MD, is a retired surgeon and director emeritus of Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership—a project of the Second Amendment Foundation—and a nationwide network of physicians, health professionals and others who support the safe and lawful use of firearms.
The California Medical Association, Dr. Wheeler says, is “stubbornly refusing” to endorse suppressors as a way to reduce hearing loss, even after the CDC report said they function extremely well.
For Dr. Wheeler, who lives in southern California, the CMA’s rebuke was not a surprise.
I’d like to say that I’m surprised, but I’m with Dr. Wheeler here. Nothing about it is shocking.
Let’s understand that suppressors are nothing like what Hollywood tells us they are. Plus, while it seems every criminal in the movies wants one, in reality, they’re really terrible for most criminal actions. They take a compact firearm like a handgun and severely limit how you can carry it. In fact, while Jordan Salinas used one to take on the Twin Falls killer, he carried it in a shoulder holster, which was probably because there wasn’t really any other way to carry a suppressed pistol under the circumstances.
Bad guys aren’t tooling around town with suppressed pistols and rifles, even though they can make them on a 3D printer if they want to.

Yeah, and not only did it not work like he expected because it prevented the weapon from cycling, but this is a guy who had a “ghost gun,” probably because he thought tracing worked like in the movies and on television. His making a suppressor because assassins in the movies have them isn’t exactly shocking.
But most of us who want suppressors aren’t looking to get them because we aspire to be secret squirrel assassins, but because if we have to shoot a bad guy in our house in the middle of the night, we’d rather not destroy our children’s hearing in the process.
The California Medical Association would rather side with hyperbole and fearmongering than hint that a freaking safety device should be legal.
Between this and the revelations about Fauci lately, it’s getting hard to trust doctors, you know?
