In Fresno, Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others

Imagine that you have a stalker or someone else who wants to cause you, personally, harm. You need to go to the courthouse to deal with it, but on the way to and from the appropriate office, you’re attacked in a green space outside the courthouse. Because of where you were going, you were unarmed, so you end up being seriously injured.

Terrible, right? And it’s happened.

In Fresno, a deputy district attorney was attacked by someone he’d prosecuted before, and now the district attorney wants some changes.

Fresno County personnel in the District Attorney’s Office, including prosecutors and special investigators, will soon be allowed to carry concealed firearms in county buildings and parks under a new county policy.

County Supervisor Nathan Magsig said the policy is intended to improve safety.

“Really the whole goal of this is safety. It’s unfortunate that we need to have an ordinance like this,” Magsig said.

The change comes about a month after a senior deputy district attorney was attacked at Courthouse Park in downtown Fresno and stabbed multiple times by someone he had prosecuted in the past.

Magsig believes the outcome could have been different if the victim or another deputy district attorney had been armed.

“The way I look at it, fortunately that individual is recovering from their injuries but if any one of those deputy DA’s were armed, it’s possibly they could’ve prevented that attack,” Magsig said.

This is fascinating because this is Fresno. This is a city in the most anti-gun state in the nation, with a population of over 550,000. Everything says that they think guns are bad, but now all of that is set to change…for some.

In other words, all animals are equal under the law, but some animals are more equal than others.

The people in the DA’s office have a legitimate reason to believe they might be targeted by someone with nefarious intent, but so does pretty much anyone else who wants to carry a gun inside the building. That’s especially true of people dealing with stalkers or abusive partners, but it doesn’t end there.

Why do they get to play second fiddle to the deputy DAs here? Why do some prosecutors get special treatment when the problem is the prohibition itself? Yes, a deputy DA might have stopped that attack if they’d been armed, but any armed citizen might, too. That would put more defensive firepower in and around the courthouse and allow attacks to be stopped even if there’s no deputy DA around.

And more importantly, it would respect the right of the people to keep and bear arms, which would be unusual for a town like Fresno, I’m sure.

I’m glad Magsig and others think that guns in the right hands would have been a game-changer. I agree.

Where I disagree is this inane idea that “the right hands” should be limited to a select handful rather than the population as a whole, most of whom will never intentionally commit a crime greater than speeding.

An armed society is a polite society, and when some animals are more equal than others, especially in their ability to keep and bear arms, you get something far darker than an impolite society. You get a society where lawbreakers have the upper hand.
