NY Armed Citizen Handles What Criminal Justice System Wouldn’t

In an ideal world, we wouldn’t need prisons. We wouldn’t even need laws. People would understand what they should and should not do, and everything would be grand. We don’t live in that world, though. We live in this one, and so some people deserve to go to prison for a long time.

When they don’t, we often find that the bad actors don’t stop trying to victimize other people.

That’s what happened in one home in Rochester, NY. The bad guy decided to keep victimizing people. The armed citizen decided otherwise.

A Rochester, New York, homeowner reportedly awakened before dawn to the sound of someone breaking into his house. By the time police arrived, the suspected burglar was dead in the kitchen—and the homeowner was ready to cooperate with investigators.

According to reports, the Rochester Police Department officers responded to a home on Avery Street at approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 3. A neighbor initially called 911 after hearing gunshots. The homeowner then called and reported that he had shot someone who broke into his residence.

Police found the intruder inside the kitchen and pronounced him dead at the scene.

This case presents a familiar contrast. New York required the homeowner to obtain government permission before acquiring and possessing the handgun he used to defend himself. The firearm had to be registered, and the owner had to navigate one of the most restrictive handgun-licensing systems in the country.

The suspected burglar, meanwhile, was already known to the criminal-justice system and had been released on parole after a previous burglary conviction.

The state’s licensing bureaucracy did not stop the break-in. Parole supervision apparently did not stop it, either. When someone allegedly entered an occupied home before dawn, the only person immediately available to protect the occupants was the armed citizen already inside.

In other words, the homeowner did what the state of New York wouldn’t or couldn’t do.

Yet who is the one who keeps being targeted by people like Gov. Kathy Hochul? It’s sure not the dude who bled out on someone else’s kitchen floor in a shooting the authorities have already said was justified. Oh no, it was the guy who had to use his gun to defend his home and family.

The recently deceased had a history. He had committed at least one burglary before, and probably a lot of others he never got caught for. This time, he tried a “hot” burglary and he felt the heat because of it. Briefly.

Look, human life matters, and I hate that this had to happen. However, New York state could have done something about it by actually punishing criminals and not making it difficult for the good guys to defend themselves. That might have been enough of a signal for our dead burglar to decide to see opportunities in a different field entirely.

Unfortunately, this is a state that is soft on criminals and hard on gun owners, and even acts like the latter really are the former. There’s nothing right about it, but this is what you get from anti-gun states, which are uniformly soft on criminals.
