The NRA v. NRA Foundation lawsuit is rather murky. There’s allegations from one side and silence from the other. What’s up with a “Foundation” webpage that was registered last year?

There’s no doubt that an ugly battle has been ongoing between the National Rifle Association and its sister organization the NRA Foundation. The NRA claims that the Foundation is not upholding their fiduciary responsibility by withholding funds and are violating trademark law. The Foundation has been mostly silent, but has publicly rebuked the NRA’s claims. The Foundation also asked for the case to be dismissed. Most of what’s out there is noise and to add to that is a mysterious webpage that was registered last year at the URL TheNRAFoundation.org.

Rumors over trouble about the NRA and Foundation were circulating mid-to-early 2025. Upon hearing those rumors several queries were made to the NRA Foundation. Questions about who serves on the Board of Trustees of the Foundation and questions about potential bylaw changes went ignored. The silence from the Foundation started months prior to the NRA filing their lawsuit against them — which occurred earlier this year in January.

As noted, TheNRAFoundation.org was registered last year. If you visit that URL, it’ll take you to a landing page with a “coming soon” message and copyright date of 2025. There’s also a field to fill out to contact the page owner. There’s no NRA Foundation branding, information, logos, or anything on the page.

According to a WHOIS database, the site was registered on July 30, 2025. There’s nothing conclusive about this data, however it does have some interesting earmarks. Under the field for “Registrant Contact,” “Foundation Foundation” is listed for the name. There is a phone number listed with a 703 area code corresponding to northern Virginia, an email address of “[email protected], and a physical address listed as “Fred VA, VA, Virginia, 22407.”

According to a July 30, 2025 press release — the same date that the webpage in question was registered — Peter Churchbourne was named the executive director of the NRA Foundation. The “contact” information on that release notes the following: “[email protected]” and the same phone number found on the WHOIS database.

An FFLs.com registration lists the same phone number as being linked to a federal firearms license for “The NRA Foundation Inc.,” with the following address: 5875 W Van Horn Tavern Road, Columbia, MO 65203.

“Fred VA” might be referencing Fredericksburg, Virginia. The ZIP code 22407 is a Fredericksburg area and there’s a Peter Churchbourne listed as being linked to a property in Fredericksburg. The same phone number is listed on the information page.

Whoever did register the web URL TheNRAFoundation.org did so using Peter Churchbourne’s email address and the number that’s listed on the Foundation’s release.

On February 2, the presumed NRA Foundation leadership was contacted about this information. An email sent to Ronnie Barrett, Peter Churchbourne, Tom King, David Coy, and Charles Cotton noted that the old NRA Foundation webpage was taken down and there was no longer an “official” way to reach out to them via webform.

“It appears that there’s no longer any ‘official’ way to reach out to the Foundation with all former Foundation URLs going to a redirect,” the email stated. “As I seek comment from the Foundation, I’ll be directing my correspondence here.”

The email asked for clarification if correspondence should be siphoned through the webform on TheNRAFoundation.org. Confirmation that the URL was the property of the NRA Foundation was requested.

Foundation leadership were directly asked: “Was the Foundation planning on fully severing itself going back to the Summer of 2025?”

The NRA Foundation leadership did not respond to that request for comment and/or provide any clarifying information. The NRA Foundation leadership was most recently contacted on March 11 and the message stated in part: “I have a standing offer with my door open to discuss any matters you would like to; on the record, off the record, or even on background.”

This webpage popping up leaves more questions than answers. Why did someone register a webpage named The NRA Foundation with Peter Churchbourne’s information — on the exact same day it was announced he was named executive director of the organization? There’s no proof that he registered the site and he won’t respond to direct questions about it.

Did the NRA Foundation have plans to sever themselves from the NRA dating back to the summer of 2025? Great question, and one we’re not likely to get a full answer to. However, the Foundation’s filing asking for a dismissal of the lawsuit has answers to some questions — which will be explored more in the future.
