The ever-increasing use of AI may be of benefit in some regards, but it has plenty of drawbacks as well. One of them is the ease with which bad actors can create fake content. Couple that with the ubiquitous nature of social media, and you have a recipe for disaster.

When I was talking with Gun Owners Action League head Jim Wallace for today’s Bearing Arms’ Cam & Company, one of the topics that came up was a recent post by the group headlined “FAKE NEWS on SUPREME COURT LICENSING “DECISION.”

GOAL has received a lot of inquiries about a supposed 9 – 0 Supreme Court decision regarding firearm licensing. To be very clear: There has been no such decision from the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) this term. If this case was real, every 2A organization would be screaming about it from the roof tops.

The social media posts and videos everyone is referring to are produced using AI and have no basis in reality. This all seems to be stemming from a Youtube channel: “Legal Firepower.” After a quick review of some other videos, it is clear that the entire YouTube channel is full of videos with incorrect and intentionally misleading information.

Legal Firepower has only been around since February, and it already claims to have more than 40,000 subscribers. The post that GOAL refers to has racked up 340,000 views in the past two weeks, and another video spewing similar lies has picked up about 20,000 views since it was posted on May 5.

In the newer video, an AI-generated man claims that the Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling at 6:23 am on April 28 in a case called National Association for Gun Rights v. U.S. that “struck down carry permits, purchase permits, ownership licenses, every permission slip system in all 50 states.”

In the older video that’s floating around, the same AI avatar claims that at 11:47 p.m. on April 22, the Supreme Court issued an emergency stay in “consolidated cases challenging permit-to-carry requirements in eight states” that “effectively invalidates permit requirements in every state.”

Both videos are absolute B.S. There is no case called NAGR v. U.S., nor are there any cases challenging permit-to-carry requirements pending before the Supreme Court. The idea of the Supreme Court issuing a unanimous decision striking down every permitting scheme in the country is downright laughable, given the makeup of the Court.

Other videos from the same channel claim that a nationwide ammunition shortage is about to hit stores, new confiscation rules are set to hit all 50 states, and that the Supreme Court has struck down the ban on gun possession for those convicted of non-violent drug offenses.

If you’re a regular visitor to Bearing Arms, you’re probably well-informed enough to know right away that these videos are complete nonsense. The problem is that there are millions of gun owners out there who aren’t carefully following Second Amendment litigation, and there are far too many people in general who are willing to take what they see, hear, and read online at face value. Even if they don’t immediately take this fake news to heart, it can still create doubt in the minds of gun owners. In fact, as I was writing this post I was asked this question on X.

I’d hate for anyone to face criminal charges because they believed the B.S. spewed by whoever’s behind this YouTube channel and decided to carry without a permit in a place where one is required. AI slop that spreads misinformation is only going to become more commonplace going forward, and it’s up to us to help inform our fellow gun owners of the facts so they don’t fall prey to those peddling fiction.
