Amanda Seyfried is standing firm amid intense backlash surrounding her remarks about the late Charlie Kirk, saying she will not apologize for calling him “hateful” despite receiving threats serious enough to warrant bodyguard protection, as reported by Fox News.

The actress, known for her roles in “Mean Girls” and “Mamma Mia,” opened up to British GQ about her turbulent year following her widely discussed post from September 2025, shortly after Kirk’s murder.

Seyfried said that after labeling Kirk “hateful,” the reaction spiraled out of control, frightening her so much that she resorted to hiring security for her own safety.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“A, I’m allowed to f—ing voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily,” she told the magazine.

“But there’s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down. And I experienced a very small fraction of that.”

The actress shared that as a mother, her greatest concern is modeling strength and openness for her children. “I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they’re not harmful,” she said.

She described the disbelief she felt when her simple expression of an opinion led to extreme safety measures. “I find myself with a f—ing bodyguard at the airport,” she recalled. “And I’m like, ‘This is crazy.’”

Following the uproar, Seyfried took to Instagram in an attempt to clarify her stance, urging followers to remember compassion even amid disagreement.

“We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity,” she wrote. “I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable.”

In the same post, she condemned violence across the country, saying, “No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”

She also responded to how her original words had been received, explaining that her intent was never to inflame tensions. “I don’t want to add fuel to a fire,” she captioned.

“I just want to be able to give clarity to something so irresponsibly (but understandably) taken out of context. Spirited discourse — isn’t that what we should be having?”

Yet despite efforts to clarify, Seyfried refused to retract her initial assessment of Kirk. Speaking with “Who What Wear” in December, she doubled down.

“I’m not f—ing apologizing for that,” she said. “I mean, for f—’s sake, I commented on one thing. I said something that was based on actual reality, actual footage, and actual quotes. What I said was pretty damn factual, and I’m free to have an opinion, of course.”

She credited social media for giving her an outlet to reclaim her voice. “Thank God for Instagram,” she added. “It was about getting my voice back because I felt like it had been stolen and recontextualized — which is what people do, of course.”

While reflecting on the scrutiny that comes with political commentary, Seyfried acknowledged the challenge of staying grounded in the current climate.

“It’s always hard to see people who are tricky and harmful have success — like our gorgeous president, the best possible example of that,” she said during the interview.

“It’s so weird to sit in a civilized restaurant. People are serving us food. You can’t unpack it too much, or else you’ll go f—ing insane. Like, how is the world still spinning?”

In response to Seyfried’s remarks, Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet defended Kirk’s legacy and pushed back on Seyfried’s comments. He told Fox News Digital that the actress “deserved whatever backlash she gets.”

“Amanda Seyfried obviously knows nothing about who Charlie Kirk actually was,” Kolvet stated.

“She’s a victim of her own algorithm and echo chamber. But if your reaction to an innocent husband and father being assassinated in cold blood is to pile on and call him ‘hateful’ instead of offering condolences, or just remaining silent — I know, wild concept — then you are the hateful one.”

Despite the fierce criticism and security concerns, Seyfried remains unwavering.

Her insistence on defending her right to speak freely, even in the face of fear, underscores the emotional intensity surrounding her controversial comments — and the polarizing conversations still unfolding across Hollywood and beyond.
