Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sounded the national alarm this week, claiming Black Americans were once again being lynched across the country.

The New York Democrat presented the charge not as a concern awaiting evidence, but as an established wave of racial violence.

“This year, there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S.,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X.

She said she had joined Rep. Ayanna Pressley and other congressional Democrats in demanding federal action.

Gold. Upgraded. Buy real gold from $1. Store it in America. Sell it with one click.

Ocasio-Cortez described the cases as “racial terror,” while Pressley declared, “Black folks are being found hanged in America.”

Their rhetoric invoked one of the ugliest chapters in American history before investigators had established that these deaths were racially motivated killings.

Pressley pushed the imagery even further by referring to “strange fruit” hanging from trees across the country.

That language was clearly intended to produce maximum outrage, but inflammatory comparisons do not become facts merely because Squad members repeat them loudly.

The central problem is that authorities have not identified the reported deaths as a widespread series of lynchings.

In several prominent cases, medical examiners and police concluded that the victims died by suicide, with no evidence that another person participated.

X Community Notes soon added a fact check to Ocasio Cortez’s post.

The note explained that most prominent cases cited in the controversy had been ruled suicides, while one remained connected to a homicide investigation.

This year, there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S.

I’m proud to have signed onto @RepPressley ‘s letter to address these widespread modern-day lynchings and put a stop to this racial terror. https://t.co/ISo20mbLyg

That official record does not support the sweeping picture Ocasio Cortez offered to millions of followers.

There is a vast difference between requesting careful investigations and announcing that the nation is already experiencing an organized campaign of racial executions.

Nearly 60 congressional Democrats signed a letter asking Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel to investigate the deaths.

Signers included Jasmine Crockett, Maxine Waters, Ro Khanna, Summer Lee, Bennie Thompson, Yvette Clarke, LaMonica McIver, Pressley, and Ocasio Cortez.

The letter argued that the country’s history of lynching justified serious federal scrutiny.

Investigating suspicious deaths is entirely reasonable, but lawmakers should not declare the conclusion before investigators have finished examining the evidence.

One case involved 21 year old Kyle Bassinga, who was found hanging from a tree in Fair Oaks Park in Cobb County, Georgia.

The discovery fueled online rumors, yet authorities reported no evidence of another person’s involvement and said the evidence indicated suicide.

Another case involved a 32 year old Black man found hanging from a tree in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina.

Police said surveillance footage showed him walking alone while carrying the electrical cord later discovered at the scene.

Investigators reported no evidence that another person was involved and concluded that the man died by suicide.

His mother later confirmed that he had struggled with mental health problems, adding painful context to a tragedy that activists had rushed to politicize.

The death of Tasia Fortune in Jackson, Mississippi, took a different turn.

The 29 year old mother of four was found hanging behind an abandoned home, and a medical examiner eventually classified her death as a homicide.

Police arrested 51 year old Jarques Ratliff in connection with Fortune’s death.

Yet investigators have not publicly established a racial motive, and Fortune’s mother has said she believes her daughter was murdered but does not believe race was the reason.

WATCH:

That distinction matters because homicide is not automatically synonymous with lynching.

A criminal killing can be horrific without proving the existence of a nationwide racial campaign, no matter how convenient that narrative may be for progressive politicians.

WATCH:

The congressional letter itself was more cautious than Ocasio Cortez’s social media performance.

It requested investigation and transparency, while her post effectively announced that the verdict had already been reached.

Several cases were ruled suicides, one case was classified as homicide, and no public evidence has connected the deaths as a coordinated campaign of racial violence.

Those facts badly undercut the dramatic claims that America is witnessing widespread lynchings.

The radical left has developed a familiar habit of turning tragedy into political ammunition before the evidence arrives.

This time, much of the evidence was already publicly available, and Community Notes delivered the reality check that congressional Democrats apparently skipped.
