WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Qualified drill sergeants will automatically advance from E-5 to E-6 after graduating from the Army’s Drill Sergeant Academy.
  • The promotion provides a pay increase of about $3,000 per year and becomes permanent after the drill sergeant tour.
  • Sergeants currently serving as drill sergeants will also be eligible, with promotions effective Sept. 10, 2026.
  • The Army says the policy should increase competition and attract stronger noncommissioned officers to drill sergeant duty.

The Army announced Friday that soldiers who qualify as drill sergeants will receive an automatic promotion to staff sergeant after completing the training required for the assignment.

The change puts a new reward behind one of the service’s most visible enlisted duties.

Drill sergeants are the campaign hat wearing instructors who deliver a stern welcome to recruits entering the Army.

Under the policy, soldiers who finish the Drill Sergeant Academy will step into the rank they are expected to hold while training the service’s newest enlisted personnel.

Soldiers must already be sergeants in the E-5 pay grade before they can volunteer for drill sergeant duty.

The automatic promotion advances those graduates to staff sergeant at E-6, moving them up one enlisted pay grade as they begin the assignment.

The promotion brings a bump of about $3,000 per year. Drill sergeant service generally requires a tour of three years away from a soldier’s primary Army job.

The policy matches one that has been in place for Army recruiters for about three years, according to officials at Army Recruiting Command.

That command oversees both drill sergeant and recruiter training.

Sergeants currently serving as drill sergeants will also be eligible for promotion to staff sergeant under the policy. The effective date for those promotions is Sept. 10, 2026.

Drill sergeant and recruiter duties are among several special assignments that the Army calls broadening assignments.

Most enlisted soldiers are expected to volunteer for such duties while pursuing advancement into higher ranks.

Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph Wilson, the senior enlisted advisor to Army Recruiting Command, described drill sergeants as central to shaping the enlisted force.

Their influence, he said, can remain with soldiers long after initial training ends.

“Drill sergeants are the backbone of the force and make a lasting impact on every enlisted soldier’s career,” Wilson said.

“Many of us who served for 10, 15, or 20 years or more always remember the drill sergeants who helped us to become ready and lethal members of the U.S. Army.”

The promotion will occur when soldiers graduate from the Army’s Drill Sergeant Academy, according to Sgt. Maj. Chris Klutts, a spokesperson for Army Recruiting Command.

It will initially be considered temporary while the soldier serves as a drill sergeant.

That promotion becomes permanent when the soldier completes the drill sergeant tour.

The arrangement gives academy graduates the staff sergeant rank while they perform the assignment, rather than making them wait until after finishing it.

“This promotes incoming drill sergeants to the rank they are going to hold to do the job,” Klutts said.

The policy therefore places the rank on qualified soldiers as they move into the drill sergeant role.

Klutts also said the change is intended to increase competition for drill sergeant assignments.

Army leaders want strong noncommissioned officers volunteering for the job so the service can select from a stronger group of candidates.

“It also increases competition. What we want is for the best NCOs in the Army to volunteer to become drill sergeants, so we are picking from the best,” Klutts said.

The promotion policy applies to drill sergeants across all levels of training.

That includes instructors handling the earliest lessons of Basic Combat Training as well as those serving in the Army’s technical job schools.

At the beginning of Basic Combat Training, drill sergeants teach foundational tasks including bed making and boot shining.

Their responsibilities also extend to Advanced Individual Training, commonly called AIT, where new soldiers learn the jobs they will perform in the Army.

The article was updated after publication on Sept. 18, 2026, to clarify the policy’s reach.

The clarification said all sergeants currently serving as drill sergeants will be eligible for promotion to staff sergeant under the new policy.
