Dem Rep Raskin Asks a Reasonable ICE Question, the Answer is a Massive Self Own [WATCH]

Democratic Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin managed to leave many scratching their heads Thursday after wondering aloud why Immigration and Customs Enforcement cannot simply “pick up” illegal aliens from jail.

His question came during a House Judiciary Committee subcommittee hearing focused on immigration enforcement.

The irony hung in the air, since it is the policies pushed by Raskin’s own party that make that task nearly impossible.

Raskin framed his question as if federal agents are simply not doing their job.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

He asked, “Why can ICE not pick up, with its massive resources, why can they not pick up the prisoners while they are still being held, or right before they’re about to be released or at the point of discharge?”

That line may sound reasonable to someone unaware of recent Democratic policy, but to anyone paying attention, it sounded detached from reality.

Democrats have spent years erecting roadblocks between federal immigration authorities and local law enforcement.

Raskin, a long time defender of sanctuary policies, knows full well that local officials in blue states and counties have barred cooperation with ICE.

If he was truly curious about why ICE cannot collect illegal aliens straight from county jails, he could start by looking at his own colleagues in government.

Take California Governor Gavin Newsom, for example. He declared earlier this year that he would rather detain illegal immigrants in state facilities than cooperate with ICE.

That statement was no offhand remark but a policy direction.

His administration has consistently restricted jails from communicating with or transferring inmates to federal agents, effectively cutting ICE out of the process.

In Virginia, Governor Abigail Spanberger wasted no time banning law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities as soon as she entered office.

That move followed the left’s broader strategy of treating immigration enforcement as politically toxic, even when it means releasing violent offenders back into American neighborhoods.

Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro went even further by invoking the Tenth Amendment to question whether federal immigration enforcement should be allowed at all.

He argued that ICE’s operations overstep constitutional boundaries.

This rhetoric, coming from a sitting governor, emboldens counties and cities to ignore federal detainer requests, allowing criminal aliens to walk free before ICE can intervene.

As if that were not enough, Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz referred to ICE as the “modern day gestapo” during a commencement speech in May 2025.

Comments like that demonize law enforcement officers who risk their lives to enforce the law and keep communities secure.

The left’s obsession with virtue signaling has crossed into dangerous territory where federal agents are portrayed as villains for doing their jobs.

At the same hearing where Raskin posed his question, the discussion revealed the chaos that sanctuary policies create.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano and Sheriff Stacey Kincaid testified about how such policies function in practice.

Their jurisdiction has repeatedly refused to coordinate with ICE, meaning dangerous individuals often go free instead of being detained for deportation.

The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into Descano’s office.

Reports suggest his office crafted policies that offered leniency to defendants who are illegal aliens while being less favorable to U.S. citizens.

The stated goal was to “consider immigration consequences” in charging and sentencing decisions, which critics say amounts to a two tier justice system.

David Bier from the CATO Institute offered testimony noting that one in five residents in Fairfax County are immigrants or live in immigrant households.

That statistic is frequently used by Democrats to justify weak enforcement, arguing that strict cooperation with ICE would disrupt local communities.

But the reality is that local leaders are protecting people who have broken immigration laws, not safeguarding lawful residents.

The left has crafted an elaborate narrative portraying ICE agents as overzealous and communities that defy them as humane.

In truth, these sanctuary policies endanger lives by tying the hands of federal officers.

When local jails refuse to hand over inmates, ICE agents must locate and arrest those individuals later, often in public settings where the risk is greater to both agents and the public.

Raskin’s question, then, feels more like political theater than genuine inquiry.

By pretending ignorance of the barriers Democrats have installed, he can publicly feign concern while hiding his party’s complicity.

His own state and region have proudly embraced sanctuary protections that block federal agents at every turn.

If Democrats want ICE to “pick up” illegal aliens from jail, they could allow it by simply removing those restrictions.

Until then, Republicans on the committee and across the country will continue pointing out the double standard.

The same lawmakers who lecture ICE about enforcement are the ones who keep it from being effective.

Raskin’s remark might have earned him a few nods from the activist base, but to anyone serious about border security, it only reinforced the problem.

The left’s policies have built a fortress around criminal illegals, and then they wonder why the gates never open for ICE.
