Three people, including a 10-month-old girl, were killed Sunday morning after a large tree collapsed during an Easter egg hunt in Germany, according to authorities, as reported by Fox News.

The incident occurred near the town of Satrupholm at approximately 11 a.m., where around 50 people had gathered in a wooded area for the holiday event.

The group included residents from a nearby residential facility that supports pregnant women, new mothers, and children.

Police said a 100-foot tree fell onto the group as high winds moved through the area. Four individuals became pinned beneath the tree when it came down.

First responders arrived at the scene and began treating victims. A 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.

The 21-year-old woman’s 10-month-old daughter was transported to a hospital but later died from her injuries.

An 18-year-old woman suffered serious injuries in the incident and was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter for treatment.

The residential facility involved in the event is part of Germany’s state-funded child welfare system, which provides support services for pregnant women and new mothers in need.

Officials confirmed that many of the attendees at the Easter egg hunt were residents of that program.

Images from the scene showed Easter eggs scattered across the ground following the incident, with emergency responders working around the fallen tree.

Two of the victims were covered with white sheets at the scene as authorities secured the area.

The German weather service had issued a high wind warning for the region prior to the incident. Officials indicated that strong winds were a contributing factor in the tree collapse.

Following the tragedy, grief counselors were dispatched to assist those affected, including witnesses and residents connected to the facility.

Leaders from the Schleswig-Holstein region, where the incident occurred, issued a joint statement addressing the loss of life.

Regional Governor Daniel Günther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Touré said they were “deeply shaken” by the events.

“Our thoughts are with the family members of the dead, with the injured, and with everyone who had to experience this terrible occurrence,” the officials said in a statement released through the dpa news agency.

Authorities have not indicated any further injuries beyond those initially reported. The circumstances surrounding the tree collapse remain under review.
