A trainee bus driver in Paris crashed a vehicle carrying passengers into the River Seine early Thursday, prompting a large emergency response and a rescue effort by bystanders and first responders, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the Juvisy-sur-Orge area of the French capital, shortly after the bus departed from a station. Authorities said the bus, which had three passengers onboard, struck a parked car before veering off course and entering the river. The impact also pushed the parked vehicle into the water.

Images from the scene showed the bus partially submerged in the river while a blue car floated nearby. Witnesses described a rapid response from people in the area, who entered the water to assist those inside the vehicle.

Emergency services deployed a significant number of personnel to the scene, including 16 fire trucks, 34 firefighters, 60 police officers, and specialized river rescue teams.

A witness identified as Natasha told local media she realized something was wrong after hearing commotion from outside.

“I realized something was happening when I heard screams, and I looked out the window and saw people in the water, three people who were swimming,” she said.

Natasha said she threw a lifebuoy to one of the individuals struggling in the water.

“The person grabbed it and managed to get on my terrace. She was in shock and wasn’t coherent … it was really remarkable,” she said.

Another witness, rowing coach Doriane Ledain, said she saw the bus enter the river and moved quickly to assist those in the water.

“Two women clung to my boat. They were in shock and certainly could not swim,” Ledain said. “They were out of strength. They weren’t talking anymore.”

Rescue worker Merlin Sacotte said the timing of the response played a key role in the outcome.

“They were very lucky,” Sacotte said, adding that if assistance had been delayed, “We wouldn’t have seen the accident and wouldn’t have been able to intervene.”

Local officials confirmed that all four individuals on the bus, including the driver, were safely removed from the river. Lamia Bensarsa Reda addressed the incident in a statement.

“It was more of a scare than anything serious, but a huge shock that must give us all pause for thought,” she said in a Facebook post, according to the Telegraph. “We are doing everything we can to secure the quays.”

The crash comes months after sections of the River Seine were reopened for public swimming for the first time in more than a century. The reopening included designated areas with newly constructed platforms, including locations near the Eiffel Tower.

Authorities have not released additional details about the cause of the crash, and the incident remains under investigation.
