New York Giants running back and 2025 rookie Cam Skattebo spent the offseason recovering from the dislocation of his right ankle, a gruesome injury he suffered on October 26, 2025.
During an appearance on NFL Network’s “The Insiders,” Skattebo made it clear that the injury will not affect how he approaches the game once he’s back on the field.
“It ain’t gonna change who I am,” Skattebo said, in comments reported by Bobby Kownack of the NFL’s website. “I had an injury, you know, it is what it is. I’ve still got plenty of football left, plenty of life left. I’m not going to let this little ankle thing bother me. I’m going to get back [to] running people over, like you see on the videos. It’s going to be normal Cam Skattebo from here on out.”
Throughout his recovery, Skattebo has leaned on advice from San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner, who spoke with him about how to come back from a serious leg injury.
Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement
The rookie has been targeting a 2026 Week 1 return for months. According to the report, outside observers see him on track to play when the Giants open the season on “Sunday Night Football” against the Dallas Cowboys on September 13.
Before that game, Skattebo will need to clear additional hurdles beginning with training camp, which opens in late July, and continue through the end of the preseason.
Head coach John Harbaugh will begin preparing for the Cowboys once camp concludes, and Skattebo has expressed confidence that he will be ready to take part in the offense by that time.
“Coach Harbaugh and [offensive coordinator Matt Nagy], I’ve felt nothing but support and love from them,” Skattebo said. “They’re always on me about getting back, and they’re starting to see where I’m at in my process, and they’re starting to trust it.”

He described his experience with the Giants staff positively, emphasizing how their backing has helped him move forward. “They’ve been really good to me. I trust both of those two, as [well] as everybody else on the staff,” he continued.
Skattebo added that he’s rediscovering his enthusiasm for football after going through the injury and recovery process.
“It’s been nothing but joy and happiness for me, just starting to fall back in love with the game after an injury for sure,” Skattebo said.
The Giants rookie’s determination to return and his insistence that his playing style will remain unchanged have been key themes in his comments throughout the offseason.
Skattebo’s remarks echo a clear message of commitment to the same aggressive, physical approach fans have come to expect from him.
His plan to “run people over” when he returns reflects his intent to reestablish himself in the Giants offense as soon as he is cleared to play.
