A vehicle exploded during an alleged street takeover on Chicago’s South Side over the weekend, as the city continues to respond to a series of similar gatherings drawing large crowds and police attention, as reported by Fox News.

The incident took place in the Gresham neighborhood, where video footage captured a large group of individuals surrounding a burning, heavily damaged car. According to reports, the vehicle was already engulfed in flames when one individual approached and threw an object into it. Seconds later, the car exploded.

Authorities said the situation unfolded early Sunday morning. The Chicago Police Department confirmed that officers responded to the scene, but by the time they arrived, the crowd had dispersed. Officials reported no injuries in connection with the explosion and stated that no arrests were made.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The event is the latest in what city officials have described as a growing pattern of street gatherings, often referred to as takeovers, that have occurred across parts of Chicago in recent weeks.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently issued a warning about similar activity, referencing what he described as a potential “teen trend” on the South Side. In a message posted publicly, Johnson cautioned families about the risks tied to these gatherings.

“Chicago, there are credible reports of a teen trend forming in Hyde Park later today,” Johnson wrote.

“Parents, be aware of where your children are going this evening. DO NOT allow your children to attend one of these gatherings; they are dangerous and can often turn violent.”

“Together we can keep our youth and our communities safe,” Johnson added.

City officials have pointed to a recent incident on March 30 as another example of the trend. That gathering reportedly drew hundreds of people and continued late into the night. Video footage from the event showed large crowds filling intersections, climbing onto vehicles, and gathering in the streets.

Police said no arrests were made during that particular incident, but the situation remains under investigation. However, enforcement actions were taken in some cases. Authorities issued at least three curfew violations, and a 16-year-old girl was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and disorderly conduct.

Residents in affected neighborhoods have also reported property damage tied to these gatherings. One individual estimated the cost of damage to his vehicle at approximately $1,000 following the March 30 event.

Officials have not confirmed whether the Gresham explosion is directly linked to prior incidents, but the pattern of large, unsanctioned gatherings has raised concerns among city leaders and law enforcement.

The Chicago Police Department has not announced any suspects in connection with the explosion. Investigators continue to review available video footage and other evidence as part of their ongoing efforts.
