Harold Ford Jr. delivered the kind of warning Democrats usually prefer to bury beneath talking points and cable news spin.

During a Tuesday appearance on Fox News program The Five, Ford admitted that embracing Democratic Socialists of America policies could send his party straight into an electoral disaster, as reported by PJ Media.

Ford tends to be more candid than fellow panelist Jessica Tarlov, who reliably defends nearly every Democratic position placed before her.

While Tarlov regularly serves as a party messenger, Ford occasionally recognizes political reality when it arrives at the table and starts pounding its fist.

“If we believe that the DSA, their ideas are the right ones for the country, then we’re going to lose,” Ford said.

That is not a warning from a Republican operative or conservative commentator, but from a prominent Democrat who understands what ordinary voters actually care about.

Ford pointed to recent Wisconsin election results as evidence that the socialist faction is gaining influence inside the Democratic Party.

“We may win a few primaries, and I was delighted to see the Wisconsin outcome last week,” he said, “with the young fellow Crowley coming from behind.”

He also noted that El Sayed “only won by a very, very small amount,” treating that narrow margin as a flashing warning light. Socialist candidates may capture select primaries, but primary victories in deeply ideological contests do not automatically translate into success with the broader electorate.

Ford argued that Democratic voters remain focused on household costs, wages, jobs, and financial stability rather than revolutionary ideology.

He predicted that once those voters understand Democratic Socialists “are not for them,” many will abandon the movement and possibly the party enabling it.

The former congressman also agreed with Democratic strategist James Carville, who had offered an even harsher verdict. “I won’t go as far as my friend James, who used the word ‘fools,'” Ford said.

Ford then supplied his own blunt assessment. “But you are foolish if you believe these ideas are not only going to win, but are going to make the country stronger and better.”

He said the purpose of politics should be “to try to make the country better, Democrat and Republican alike,” rather than chasing television attention or being “supportive of terrorist organizations.”

That comment landed squarely on a radical wing that often seems more interested in activism than governing.

Ford deserves some credit for confronting the socialist problem while other Democrats pretend Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her ideological allies represent the political center.

Tarlov has even pushed the astonishing idea that Ocasio-Cortez should be viewed as a moderate, which says plenty about how far left the party has drifted.

Still, Ford carried some familiar Democratic baggage into his economic argument.

He proposed eliminating “all of President Trump’s tariffs because they’re driving up costs,” even though the inflationary catastrophe Democrats predicted from those tariffs has not materialized as advertised.

Ford also criticized Trump over the size of the federal government.

“I’m disappointed with President Trump,” he said, arguing that the president should have reduced government spending “by 5%” because “there’s enough waste there to do it.”

That complaint conveniently ignores the relentless Democratic resistance to nearly every serious attempt at cutting federal programs, reducing payrolls, or closing wasteful offices.

Democrats rush into Congress and the courts whenever Trump tries to trim Washington, then complain that he failed to make government smaller.

If Ford wants meaningful reductions, he should direct more of his frustration toward members of his own party.

They treat every federal program as sacred, every government position as permanent, and every proposed spending cut as an attack on civilization itself.

Ford nevertheless identified the central danger facing Democrats before the midterms.

A loud, rigid, socialist faction is attempting to dictate the party agenda, while voters concerned about groceries, housing, taxes, public safety, and national strength are recoiling from the spectacle.

The coming congressional elections will determine whether President Trump can continue advancing his America First agenda with Republican control of Congress.

If Democrats keep mistaking socialist enthusiasm for national popularity, Ford may soon discover that his warning was not nearly dramatic enough.
