I confess I don’t spend a tremendous amount of time thinking about what Canadians think of America. I just sort of assumed that there was a love-hate thing going on because they are basically a little brother who is stuck with us whether they like it or not. Sure they probably hate that sometimes but also a lot of them probably admire a lot of things about America.
But I came across this dispute on X today which made me wonder if things are a lot worse than I suspect. Ben Dreyfuss offered a pretty friendly suggestion that he thought of Canada as America’s “little buddy.”
Like, if some 9/11s Britain, I’d feel the same way. Kill them all. Kill anyone who gets in the way. If someone 9/11s Germany or Italy or whoever, I think we should also help kill the perpetrators but it’s not going to make me as emotionally blood thirsty.

You can agree or disagree with his point but I think what he’s trying to say is that he has some personal identification with people in Canada that he might not feel for people in, say, Germany. It’s a positive feeling of wanting to protect someone.
But a Canadian who describes himself as pro-American strongly disagreed and argued that most people have no idea how much Canadians hate America these days.

come to canada, dont tell anyone your american and bring up the US. you will see how much we hate you and how openly we talk about it.

I’m pro American. I’m just telling you how my fellow Canadians feel. Anti-american hatred is super normalized and done out in the open.
On my ski trip this winter, >50% of Americans I met on the ski lift preemptivly apologized cuz they knew how much everyone hated them.

Of course any random person on X can offer an opinion. That doesn’t make it true. Is there any outside evidence for what he’s saying? Well, maybe so.

New results from The POLITICO Poll suggest a lasting chill has settled over the world’s former bosom buddies. Americans are rosy as ever about their northern neighbors, but Canadians don’t share the love…
Canadians were the most likely — among respondents in Canada, Germany, France and the U.K. — to say the U.S. is not a reliable ally (58 percent).
A slight 42 percent plurality of respondents from Canada go even further, saying the U.S. is no longer an ally of Canada. Only about one in three Canadians, 37 percent, said “The US is still an ally of Canada.”
That poll is from back in February. I don’t remember seeing it at the time but if you did (or another poll like it) maybe you’re not surprised by this.
Does it matter if Canada hates us? I’m not sure it does. As long as they’re nice to us in person what they say behind our backs probably doesn’t matter.

Anyway, I don’t think I can bring myself to hate Canadians even if they’re hating us. They’d have to be really rude and snooty like the French before I’d return the feeling.
