Does THIS Count as an Invasion?

At what point can you call the influx of illegal immigrants into your country an “invasion?”

Pro-immigration activists say that using such language is inflammatory, and no doubt it truly does inflame anger in people. And it’s true that sometimes whipping up a crowd into a frenzy is grossly irresponsible. If all you are doing is cherry-picking isolated incidents and using hyperbole to turn molehills into mountains, unreasonably angering people, it’s terribly wrong. 

Think Renee Good’s case, for instance. She drove her car at a Customs and Border Protection agent and was, unfortunately, shot. Turning that into an “execution” is ridiculous, but there it is. It works better politically. 

But sometimes it is not mere rhetoric to use such language, and it is right for people to be enraged. And, I would say, armed Afghan and Iraqi soldiers wielding weapons on Belgian territory definitely counts as an invasion.

There has been comparatively little coverage about the fact that illegal immigrants are now being “protected” by armed former military soldiers, and that the Belgian government has ceded some of its territory to gangs determined to invade Britain by crossing the English Channel. Apparently, and appropriately, Nazi pillboxes from World War II are filling up with migrants who are being “protected” from interference with their illegal activities. 

“Violent” ex-soldiers from countries such as Iraq or Afghanistan have massed at small boat launch sites on the Belgian coast, police have revealed.

A growing number of military men have been spotted “accompanying” the boats – making it too dangerous for police to intervene, local force chief Nicholas Paelinck said this week.

With French authorities taking a stricter approach to monitoring the would-be migrants, small boat smuggling gangs have moved to launch from Belgium.

But armed men have rendered authorities impotent to stop the boats.

“Normally, we try to puncture the boat beforehand to prevent the crossing to the United Kingdom,” Mr Paelinck said.

“But that is not possible here, because you see ex-military personnel from Iraq circling the boat to ensure the police cannot get to it.

“Officers were threatened by the soldiers, and a mirror was even smashed with an iron bar. We conducted a risk analysis, and it is too dangerous to operate on that beach anymore. We will not do that again.”

Police have also found “weapons of war and ammunition” in migrant tent camps, and have warned it is “only a matter of time” before officers are confronted.

Ever heard of an army? It’s supposed to protect your borders. You should try it sometime. 

I noticed this story a couple of weeks ago, and was too busy to write about it. I did some follow up research, and as far as I can tell it only got a day of coverage, and that in the British conservative media. Nobody wants to talk about it, because it makes European and Belgian officials look really awful. 

Belgium is home of the European Parliament, and the EU makes plenty of noises about upping their military power to defend against a notional invasion of NATO countries. I think it is a great idea, and it is something that American presidents of both political parties have been urging for decades—ever since the end of the Cold War, when European countries rushed to disarm. 

I doubt Russia would or could invade a NATO country, but the weaker European countries are, the higher the risk. Best to deter. Peace through strength and all that. 

But when Europe can’t even defend its beaches from former soldiers from third-world countries, it’s hard to expect Putin to do much more than laugh. He may have his hands far more than full in Ukraine, and thus incapable of presenting much of a threat, but then again, Western Europe looks ripe for the picking.
