Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Co-Chair Megan Romer said during a recent television interview that no Democratic Party operatives have contacted her to encourage the organization to soften its calls for eliminating several longstanding U.S. institutions, as reported by Red State.

Romer made the comments during an interview with NewsNation host Chris Cuomo, who asked whether Democratic officials had privately urged the organization to scale back proposals that include abolishing the Senate, the Supreme Court, national borders, and the presidency.

Cuomo suggested that some Democrats might appreciate the organization’s ability to attract new voters while simultaneously worrying that its platform could be viewed as too extreme by the broader electorate.

“Democrats have to be calling you, right, and saying, ‘Listen, love the energy, love that you’re getting these new voters, love that you’re getting us back in the blue-collar business. It’s great, it’s great,” Cuomo said.

“‘But just, you gotta relax a little bit with the abolish this and get rid of that.'”

He continued by saying, “It sounds radical, it sounds like you want to destroy our Constitutional Republic.”

Romer responded that no Democratic operatives had made such a request.

“Not a single phone call from a Democratic operative has come to my phone.”

The exchange followed previous interviews in which Romer discussed the DSA’s policy goals, including proposals to abolish several federal institutions.

The interview has drawn renewed attention as Democratic candidates and party officials continue debating the influence of progressive and socialist groups within the party.

The discussion also follows recent comments from Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., regarding the growing influence of democratic socialist candidates and organizations.

During an appearance on Fox News with host Shannon Bream, Khanna was asked about the increasing support for the DSA and similar movements.

“I’ll tell you why they’re winning. People are upset at an unfair political and economic system,” Khanna said.

“The Democratic Party needs reform. Look, this is a party that hasn’t delivered enough for working-class Americans,” he added.

Khanna framed the issue as one of economic concerns rather than directly addressing the DSA’s institutional proposals.

The comments from both Romer and Khanna come as political observers continue to examine how Democratic leaders are responding to the expanding visibility of democratic socialist organizations.

The issue has also prompted discussion following reports that some Democratic strategists have privately expressed concern that the DSA’s platform could complicate messaging during general election campaigns.

One strategist quoted in media coverage was Democratic strategist Steve Schale, who commented on the political challenges associated with responding to the organization’s agenda.

“You now have to argue to voters that you aren’t insane when you want to talk about making groceries cheaper,” Schale said.

Schale’s remarks were made in response to Romer’s earlier interview outlining the DSA platform.

Romer’s statement that she has not received any requests from Democratic operatives to moderate the organization’s messaging has added another point to the ongoing discussion about the relationship between Democratic Party officials and democratic socialist activists as the 2026 election cycle continues.

The interview and subsequent reactions have renewed attention on the DSA’s stated policy objectives and how Democratic candidates and elected officials choose to address questions about the organization’s influence within the party.
