Following the incidents, Rivera reportedly contacted law enforcement.
According to Nassau County officials, he approached police and made a statement regarding the events.
“While we were at the scene, we received information that an individual was stopped at 169 Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook,” Det. Lt. George Darienzo said.
“He asked to see police, and when police arrived, he said he killed somebody that night,” Darienzo added.
Rivera was taken into custody outside a 7-Eleven in Lynbrook, according to police.
Authorities said Rivera had been living in the United States since 2016.
He was 12 years old at the time he arrived, police said.
The investigation into both incidents remains ongoing as detectives continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the attacks.
Officials have not released additional details about what may have led to either incident.
Rivera has been charged with multiple counts of murder in connection with the two deaths.
Court records indicate he has entered a plea of not guilty.
Law enforcement officials have not identified a motive for the attacks, and no further information about the victims has been released beyond their ages and connection to the suspect.
Police said the case will proceed through the court system as prosecutors present evidence related to both incidents.
