Elite “Far-Right” Smear Fails Spectacularly as AfD Party Scores Historic Win on Anti-Invasion Platform [WATCH]

The Alternative for Germany, or AfD, won a historic victory in Sunday’s Saxony-Anhalt state election, becoming the largest political force in the eastern German state while falling short of the parliamentary majority needed to govern on its own, as reported by Zero Hedge.

The AfD received 43.8% of the vote and won 39 seats in the 83-member state parliament, according to preliminary official results. A majority requires 42 seats.

The result represents the strongest performance by the party in a German state election and leaves the question of how the next government will be formed unresolved.

The Christian Democratic Union, the party of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, finished a distant second with 17.2% of the vote. The CDU had received 37.1% in the previous Saxony-Anhalt election in 2021.

AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund, 35, led the party’s campaign in the state. After the result became clear, Siegmund described the outcome as a historic achievement.

“We have achieved exactly what we wanted to achieve,” Siegmund said. “We have made history in this state.”

The election marked the first time the AfD has won a state election in Germany.

The result also created the possibility of the country’s first state government involving a party classified by German authorities as right-wing extremist since World War II.

However, the AfD does not currently have enough seats to form a government by itself.

AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla said the result gave the party a mandate to govern and called the performance “sensational.”

“We have halved the CDU, so from that point of view it’s a great evening,” Chrupalla told journalists in Magdeburg, referring to an earlier statement by Merz concerning the AfD’s expected performance.

“Ulrich Siegmund will be the new premier of Saxony-Anhalt,” Chrupalla said. “From here, we will change Germany.”

Chrupalla also said the party would be willing to discuss possible arrangements with other political groups if necessary, including the possibility of an AfD minority government.

The path to government remains complicated. Other major German parties have maintained a policy of refusing cooperation with the AfD, commonly described as a political “firewall.”

The CDU’s state leadership has also indicated that it does not intend to cooperate with the AfD.

Siegmund campaigned on issues including immigration, energy policy and changes to education and cultural policy.

He has advocated what he describes as a “remigration and deportation offensive” and has opposed additional wind farm construction.

The election drew unusually high participation. About 1.7 million people were eligible to vote in the state, which has approximately 2.1 million residents.

Turnout reached roughly 78%, significantly higher than the 60.3% recorded in the 2021 state election.

The result represents a major setback for Merz’s CDU, which had governed Saxony-Anhalt since 2002.

The party’s decline from 37.1% in 2021 to 17.2% this year leaves it facing difficult negotiations over the composition of the next state government.

The AfD’s rise in Saxony-Anhalt comes amid voter concerns over immigration, economic conditions and energy policy. The state is part of former East Germany, where the party has established significant support.

The party’s state organization has been classified by German domestic intelligence authorities as a confirmed right-wing extremist organization, a designation the AfD rejects.

Its success in Saxony-Anhalt nevertheless gives the party its most significant state-level electoral victory since its formation.

For now, the election has produced a clear winner but not a government.

With 39 seats, the AfD holds the largest bloc in the state parliament but remains three seats short of the majority needed to govern independently.

Negotiations among the other parties will determine whether Siegmund and the AfD can ultimately take control of the state government.
