Hakeem Jeffries Humiliated as Maryland Gerrymander Scheme Crumbles in Court [WATCH]

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has suffered another embarrassing setback in his campaign to capture congressional seats through aggressive Democratic redistricting.

This time, a Maryland judge blocked a proposed constitutional amendment that could have threatened the state’s lone Republican congressional district, as reported by Red State.

Jeffries, who represents New York’s Eighth District, personally traveled to Maryland to encourage Democrat lawmakers to pursue the plan.

His lobbying effort now looks like another wasted trip in a growing series of legal defeats for his party.

Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Robert J. Thompson ruled Wednesday that the amendment cannot appear on the November ballot.

He found that lawmakers missed a statutory deadline, presented voters with misleading ballot language, and violated Maryland’s single subject rule.

Those are not minor clerical mistakes that can be waved away by political consultants.

They are three separate failures involving laws and constitutional safeguards that Maryland lawmakers are expected to understand before trying to rewrite congressional boundaries.

Thompson stayed his ruling because Maryland Democrats are appealing the decision to the Maryland Supreme Court.

The timetable is tight because the Maryland Board of Elections has said ballot printing is scheduled to begin on September 3.

The central finding was especially damaging for Democrats who routinely lecture the country about institutions and democratic norms.

Thompson ruled that Maryland Democrats “did not follow the very laws” they enacted.

That conclusion cuts straight through the political spin.

Democrat lawmakers wanted the power to reshape congressional districts, but apparently could not be bothered to obey the legal requirements governing how such a proposal reaches voters.

State Senator Steve Hershey, the Republican minority leader, praised the decision as a victory for voters and constitutional government.

He said, “Today’s ruling is an important victory for the rule of law and for every Maryland voter who expects government to follow the Constitution and the election laws it enacts.”

The Maryland defeat adds to Jeffries’ increasingly awkward record as he seeks enough Democrat seats to claim the Speaker’s gavel.

He has spent much of the past year pressing Democrat controlled legislatures to redraw maps that would push Republicans out of competitive congressional districts.

Maryland was a particularly tempting target because Republicans currently hold only one congressional seat in the state.

Eliminating or weakening that district could have handed Democrats another advantage in the battle for control of the House.

Yet the plan ran into the same obstacle Democrats have encountered elsewhere, namely state constitutions.

Apparently, constitutional limits remain more than decorative suggestions, even when Democrat leaders decide their national political ambitions deserve special treatment.

Virginia delivered an earlier warning when its Supreme Court rejected a Democrat redistricting amendment.

State Democrats had attempted to force through a referendum involving the wildly shaped map commonly described as the “lobster map,” but judges found that the process violated the Virginia Constitution.

Colorado brought another legal defeat in June. Judges there blocked Democrat redistricting proposals after determining that the measures, as written, also violated the state constitution.

That makes Maryland the third state this year where courts have disrupted Democrat efforts to manipulate congressional boundaries.

Virginia, Colorado, and Maryland now form an uncomfortable pattern for Jeffries and his allies, who keep discovering that election laws apply even when partisan power is at stake.

Maryland Democrats have already appealed and are attempting to frame the dispute as a matter of voter participation.

Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for Governor Wes Moore, said, “We believe Maryland voters deserve the opportunity to make their voices heard, and we will continue fighting to ensure they can.”

The problem with that argument is simple.

Voters cannot be asked to approve a measure through a process that ignores deadlines, uses misleading language, and violates constitutional rules designed to protect the integrity of the ballot.

The Maryland Supreme Court may act quickly because election officials face an approaching printing deadline.

Until then, Jeffries must wait to see whether another court rescues a redistricting campaign that has repeatedly crashed into the law.

The stakes extend far beyond one Maryland district.

The 2026 midterm elections will determine whether Republicans can maintain control of Congress and continue advancing President Donald Trump’s America First agenda, while Democrats search for every possible route back to power.
