Ceuta Descending Into Open Warfare

Pedro Sánchez and Ursula von der Leyen have achieved their #1 goal regarding the migrant invasion of Ceuta: get it off the front pages and out of the European conversation. 

What they have not done is actually solve the problem. Ceuta is still overrun with illegal immigrants, and the residents of the Spanish city are watching their home city devolve into a real-life version of Escape from New York.

It has been four weeks since the internet erupted with videos of 60-70,000 illegal aliens storming the beaches and the fence surrounding the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, a city of about 85,000 people, and entering sovereign Spanish territory. 

The triggering event was a Supreme Court decision that required full due process to deport illegal aliens, should they demand it, ensuring that many of the migrants could delay the process of deportation — should the Spanish government even try — for months or years. 

The Spanish Prime Minister had already, unilaterally, regularized around a million illegal immigrants this year in order to “fight the far right,” and North African Muslims in Morocco (and likely elsewhere, since the invasion was planned and not spontaneous) saw an opportunity to get their feet in the door and eventual access to the Schengen Zone in the European Union.

The Spanish police are apparently firing rubber bullets at local demonstrators who, in Ceuta on the evening in question, were protesting against the migration policy and seeking to drive out the illegal immigrants.  

At the same time, there was not a single report during the Ceuta invasion that the police had ever once deployed such a weapon against tens of thousands of illegal border stormers.  

In comparison, this is a disturbing observation regarding the deployment of means.

Unsurprisingly, even EU countries run by liberal governments erupted in anger. They had seen this movie before, and it turned out to be a horror show. 

The vast majority of the invaders voluntarily returned to Morocco — their goal was to provide cover for the people who wanted to stay (many of whom were criminals taken to the border by the Moroccan police to dump them on Spain) and to have a fun day or two trashing a Spanish city — but 10-15,000 stayed behind and set up camp inside the city or on the beaches.

Pedro Sánchez and Ursula von der Leyen swung into action, downplaying the crisis and bragging that most of the illegal immigrants voluntarily returned, and after a few days the crisis left the front pages. 

But not Ceuta. There, it still rages, as does a crime wave that is ruining the lives of the Spaniards who live there, about whom nobody in the European elites or Spanish government seems to care. 

Conditions in the city have kept deteriorating, with rape becoming common, and migrants who are quite willing to commit violence and/or intimidate people overwhelming the ordinary citizens.

Fear not, though. The liberal NGOs have mobilized to help out. Not only are they feeding the migrants to ensure that they are living well enough, but they are now arming them with weapons to push back against justifiably angry citizens. There has been a full mobilization of the humanitarian resources to help the migrants, but apparently the same  cannot be said for helping the legal residents of Ceuta, who I suppose are colonizers who don’t deserve consideration.

Residents of Spain’s Ceuta are calling for the Red Cross to leave the territory over its response to the recent mass influx of illegal migrants, accusing the organization of providing extensive assistance to illegals while neglecting struggling locals.

Residents cited the distribution of food, clothing, blankets and healthcare to newly arrived migrants while elderly people, families with children and local businesses face what they describe as growing insecurity and insufficient support.

Protesters have summed up their anger with the message: “They have no shame.”

No doubt the left will portray this as meany white people trying to kick the poor migrants out due to racism, just as homeless advocates slander people who don’t want bums sleeping, shooting up, and crapping in the streets as they try to live their lives, but the fact is that the migrants (and homeless people) are simply responding to incentives created by the powers that be.

The people who don’t belong there are the problem that needs to be solved, but the ultimate cause is that those powerful people are clearly happy this is happening. They created the conditions, have sent in resources to ensure that the migrants stay and take over the city, and are suppressing the people who are just trying to recover their lives. 

The purpose of a system is what it does, and in this case the system is facilitating the takeover of Ceuta by illegal aliens, just as the Homeless Industrial Complex has kept Blue cities overrun with addicts in the streets. 

The basic reality is that you cannot have open borders and a functioning first-world society at the same time. The people of Martha’s Vineyard faced that reality, but they could count on the Biden administration to dump their illegal aliens at a military base out of view.

Many decent people are unwilling to face that fact, so they look away. They dump the problem on the poors. And when they look away, they empower people like Sánchez, von der Leyen, and the open-borders crowd. 

And then they wonder why right-wing populists rise to power.
