House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Sunday that the planned deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to airports could pose risks to travelers, as federal officials prepare to move forward with the directive beginning Monday.

Speaking after the announcement, Jeffries raised concerns about the role ICE personnel would play inside airports and the potential impact on the public.

“The last thing that the American people need are for untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports all across the country, potentially to brutalize or, in some instances, kill them,” Jeffries said.

The remarks came as ICE prepares to assist Transportation Security Administration officers following a directive issued by President Donald Trump.

The deployment is tied to a broader effort to address staffing shortages within TSA as a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security continues.

Under the plan, ICE agents will be sent to airports across the country to support TSA personnel who have remained on duty despite the funding lapse.

TSA officers have been working without pay during the shutdown, contributing to operational strain and delays at security checkpoints.

Trump announced the move Sunday in a post on Truth Social, stating that ICE agents would provide support for TSA operations and attributing the situation to actions by Democratic lawmakers.

“On Monday, ICE will be going to airports to help our wonderful TSA Agents who have stayed on the job despite the fact that the Radical Left Democrats, who are only focused on protecting hard line criminals who have entered our Country illegally, are endangering the USA by holding back the money that was long ago agreed to with signed and sealed contracts, and all,” Trump wrote.

He also addressed anticipated criticism of the deployment, adding, “But watch, no matter how great a job ICE does, the Lunatics leading the incompetent Dems will be highly critical of their work.”

Administration officials have said the ICE presence will not replace TSA screeners but will instead provide support in other areas of airport security operations.

Border Czar Tom Homan discussed the plan during a Sunday interview, outlining how ICE personnel would be used alongside existing TSA staff.

“I don’t see an ICE agent looking at an X-ray machine – because you’re not trained in that – [but] there are certain parts of security that TSA is doing that we can move them off those jobs and put them in the specialized jobs to help move those lines,” Homan said.
