WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • War Secretary Pete Hegseth directed commanders and supervisors to conduct an October voting stand down for service members.
  • This year’s voting pause must occur no later than October 15th and will continue every election.
  • Troops may use the day to complete absentee ballots, help family members, or vote at a polling place.
  • Hegseth contrasted the voting order with Lloyd Austin’s February 2021 training pause focused on alleged extremism.

Voting is a civic duty for service members just as it is for every other citizen, but military life can make that basic responsibility needlessly cumbersome.

Many troops serve outside their home states and must navigate the absentee ballot process from afar, adding time and effort to an act civilians often complete closer to home.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth is moving to clear that obstacle with a department wide voting pause in October. Under his new direction, commanders and supervisors at every level will conduct a one day stand down, with the precise October date still to be determined.

The policy begins this year and is intended to continue for every election. For this year’s pause, Hegseth said it will be carried out no later than October 15th.

Hegseth framed the order around the character and civic responsibilities of those serving in uniform. “So, we all agree that voting is important, number one.

We all agree that at the War Department we serve the best citizens in the country, those who wear the uniform, number two.”

His instructions apply throughout the department and make the voting pause a recurring feature of election season.

“Therefore, I’m directing all commanders, and supervisors, at all levels, across this department, to conduct a one-day stand-down during the month of October, beginning this year and continuing every election. This year, we will execute the stand-down no later than October 15th.”

The order does not instruct service members to support any candidate or party. Instead, it gives them dedicated time to cast their ballots and choose their elected leaders without the usual scheduling headaches that can accompany military service far from home.

“Now, we’re not telling you who to vote for. But we will give you every opportunity to do so,” Hegseth said.

He described voting as the method envisioned by the founding fathers for free citizens to participate in government.

Many service members reside outside their home states for obvious reasons, making the process of requesting, completing, and returning absentee ballots more complicated.

Hegseth said troops have faced unnecessarily difficult procedures while serving far from home.

The designated day can be used to complete an absentee ballot, assist family members with theirs, or visit a polling place in person. Hegseth said the department would take the necessary time to ensure service members can vote and have their voices heard.

He closed that portion of his announcement with a direct declaration that priorities are changing.

“It’s about time we prioritize that in this department. And we’re fixing it, right here, right now.”

Hegseth also invoked a previous military pause ordered during the Biden administration.

“In fact, in February of 2021, under the Biden administration, then-Secretary of War Lloyd Austin, mandated an urgent training stand-down.”

Austin paused training operations and exercises to address what Hegseth called a vaguely defined but urgent “extremism” problem. Hegseth contrasted that focus with what he described as a new and apolitical War Department operating with the right priorities under President Trump.

The difference could hardly be sharper. Austin used a training pause to search for extremists, while Hegseth is using one day to help service members exercise the same voting rights enjoyed by the citizens they defend.

That contrast also reflects the broader divide presented between Democrat and Republican military leadership.

Democrats turned the military toward ideological pursuits, while Republicans focus on building a force trained and equipped to defeat the enemy through fire, maneuver, and shock effect.

The absentee process can be lengthy even for service members familiar with military paperwork and overseas assignments.

Hegseth’s order gives troops time to handle that burden without telling them how to vote.

The message is simple: Those who serve the country should receive every reasonable opportunity to participate in choosing its leaders.
