The Multicultural Business Coalition, which represents 50 chambers of commerce serving ethnically diverse businesses, filed two lawsuits in New York state court Monday.

One of the lawsuits is a seven-page class-action complaint brought on behalf of “hundreds” of store owners who are described in the filing as members of groups that have historically faced discrimination.

According to court documents, the class-action lawsuit argues that the business owners’ civil rights would be violated if the municipal grocery stores are permitted to open.

The second lawsuit makes a similar argument about Mamdani’s proposed grocery stores. The filing states that the municipal stores “have pledged to sell food items 30% below the market rate, a rate that rivals or exceeds Walmart discounts.”

The lawsuits were filed as Mamdani moves forward with a campaign promise to create government-owned grocery stores in New York City.
