President Donald Trump turned up the heat on Canada Tuesday, openly considering whether Lake Ontario should be renamed Lake America as trade relations between Washington and Ottawa sink deeper into hostility.

The proposal delivered another unmistakable message that the days of Canada receiving automatic economic favors may be finished, as reported by Fox News.

“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to be doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump wrote Tuesday morning on Truth Social.

The jab came after negotiations collapsed and both governments began preparing additional tariffs.

Trump also accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of inventing claims that the United States sought concessions involving protections for the French language.

Carney has attempted to portray the dispute as a defense of Canadian language and culture, a narrative the Trump administration flatly rejects.

“I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French!” Trump wrote. “In fact, I have never even thought of doing such a stupid thing.”

Trump then aimed directly at Carney and his political standing in Quebec.

“This lie was made up by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister in an attempt to gain political support, which he has totally lost, from the people of Quebec,” Trump added. “I love French Canadians!”

Carney announced Saturday that Canada was suspending negotiations, saying, “We were not prepared to compromise on the protection of the French language and our culture.”

He also claimed those matters were “never on the table” from the Canadian perspective.

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer pushed back on Monday, describing Carney’s account as a “funny, fake story.”

Greer said American negotiators were actually concerned about regulations affecting United States streaming companies, not whether Canadians could continue speaking French.

The controversy lands at a particularly sensitive moment for Ontario, the most populous Canadian province and a major center of automobile production.

Lake Ontario is shared by Ontario and New York, giving Trump’s proposed name change extra bite as the neighboring governments trade accusations.

Trump has previously used geographic names to make political points, most notably by directing the Gulf of Mexico to be called the Gulf of America.

Critics predictably erupted, but Trump once again demonstrated his talent for dominating the conversation while forcing foreign leaders to respond on his terms.

Vice President JD Vance carried the administration’s trade argument into Maine on Monday, accusing Canada of giving Chinese imports better treatment than goods produced by Americans.

His message was blunt, especially for residents whose businesses depend on access to Canadian markets.

“They treat Chinese goods more fairly than they do the goods that come from the people of Maine: It’s insanity,” Vance said during an event in Brewer. “And what we’ve said to Canada is stop it.”

Vance said Washington and Ottawa had appeared close to reaching an agreement before Canadian officials introduced unreasonable demands near the end of negotiations.

In the administration’s telling, Canada tried the familiar routine of expecting American flexibility while refusing to offer basic fairness in return.

Trump also announced Monday that tariffs of 50 percent on Canadian automobiles, automobile parts, trucks and steel would begin Jan. 1, 2027.

The move gives industries time to prepare while placing enormous pressure on Ottawa to reconsider its negotiating posture.

“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump wrote Monday.

That accusation captures the administration’s broader view that friendly countries should not mistake American patience for permission to exploit American workers.

Despite the increasingly sharp rhetoric, Vance suggested a workable agreement remains possible if Canada returns with realistic terms.

“I think that we should have a deal,” he said. “We expect fairness in our trade policy.”

The ball now sits squarely in Ottawa’s court, where Carney must choose between political theater and serious negotiation.

Trump’s Lake America taunt may sound playful, but the economic warning beneath it is clear: Washington is no longer interested in business as usual.
