Jamal Adams Agrees to Join the Minnesota Vikings Ahead of Training Camp

Veteran defender Jamal Adams announced Monday night on social media that he had agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings. On X, Adams posted “Year 10,” along with a “#skol” hashtag, his new team’s popular mantra.

The agreement came on the eve of training camp and adds an intriguing player to a defense led by creative defensive coordinator Brian Flores. A source confirmed the agreement to ESPN.

Adams, 30, has appeared in 102 career games with 87 starts. He has recorded 546 tackles, 22.5 sacks, four interceptions and 36 pass deflections during his career.

With the Las Vegas Raiders last season, Adams appeared in 17 games. That was his most since he played in 16 games during his second season with the New York Jets in 2018.

Adams totaled 45 tackles, a sack, seven pressures and a forced fumble last season with the Raiders. He recorded at least four tackles in a game on five occasions.

At one point in his career, Adams was one of the best safeties in the league. The Jets selected him with the sixth pick of the 2017 draft.

Adams played three seasons and 46 games with the Jets. During those three seasons, he made two Pro Bowl appearances and was named first team All Pro in 2019.

For the Seattle Seahawks, Adams played in just 34 games because of injury. He added another Pro Bowl appearance in 2020.

Adams played in five games with the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions in 2024. Injuries have stymied him in recent years, and he has not been a full time starter since 2023.

Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley was part of the front office that brought Adams to the Seahawks. That move came in a blockbuster trade with the Jets prior to the 2020 season.

The Vikings have been awaiting word on the future of longtime safety Harrison Smith, who is contemplating retirement. Adams has played primarily at linebacker in the latter stages of his career.

During his season with the Raiders, Adams played all 448 of his defensive snaps at linebacker. He appeared in all 17 games for Las Vegas.

In Minnesota, Flores has used unusual personnel deployments and has often put three safeties on the field at once. Josh Metellus has served as a roving edge rusher, linebacker and defensive back for much of that time.

Adams could help alleviate depth issues if Smith does not return. Smith is contemplating retirement, and the Vikings have been awaiting word on his future.

Adams has excelled as a blitzer in his career and has 22.5 career sacks. That figure includes 16 combined during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
