Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico returned to the national spotlight this week with another sermon blending progressive politics, immigration policy, and his own interpretation of Christianity.

This time, he suggested Jesus would demand benefits for illegal immigrants and unleash fury inside the United States Senate.

Talarico has built a political identity around lecturing Christians about their faith while embracing theology that many believers consider deeply outside traditional doctrine.

He has argued that God is nonbinary, said he “hates Christianity,” and portrayed Christians as “America’s villains,” yet he continues presenting himself as an authority on biblical teaching.

The Texas Democrat has also boasted that his church sheltered “a mother and son, who were close to being deported by ICE.”

That admission fit neatly with his broader effort to cast immigration enforcement as a moral offense rather than a basic responsibility of a sovereign nation.

During his latest appearance, Talarico argued that Christian compassion requires Americans to welcome illegal immigrants and provide them with government assistance.

As usual, the inconvenient questions about borders, citizenship, public safety, and taxpayers were largely absent from his moral lecture.

“Scripture tells us that you can’t love God and hate other people, you can’t love God and abuse the immigrant, you can’t love God and oppress the poor, you can’t love God and bully the outcast,” he said.

Talarico used the message to frame opposition to expansive welfare benefits and illegal immigration as incompatible with Christian belief.

That is quite a theological leap, even by the standards of modern progressive politics.

Scripture repeatedly commands personal charity and care for the vulnerable, but Democrats routinely translate those duties into federal mandates, open border policies, and another bill handed to American workers.

Talarico then imagined Jesus appearing in the Senate to condemn lawmakers who support restrictions on food assistance, Medicaid, and illegal immigration.

His version of Christ sounded remarkably similar to a Democratic campaign surrogate armed with a welfare platform and talking points from an activist organization.

“I often wonder what would Jesus do if he visited the U.S. Senate. I think he would tell the senators on the floor, ‘Depart from me, for I was hungry, and you cut my food assistance. I was sick, and you kicked me off Medicaid. I was a stranger, and you deported me and my family,’ he said.

The comparison appeared designed to equate illegal immigrants with Christ while portraying elected officials who enforce immigration law as villains awaiting divine judgment.

Missing from the performance was any recognition that governments have lawful duties distinct from the personal charitable obligations of individual believers.

Talarico was not finished with his biblical reenactment.

He suggested Jesus would respond to Senate policy by overturning furniture, invoking the episode in which Christ drove money changers from the temple in Jerusalem.

“And then I think he would flip over those fancy desks on the floor of the U.S. Senate.”

The dramatic line offered a made for television image, although it did little to explain why enforcing federal law or limiting taxpayer benefits should be compared with corrupt commerce inside a sacred temple.
