Beverly Vance, the mother of Vice President JD Vance, is defending her daughter-in-law, Usha Vance, following online criticism over the second lady’s choice of maternity clothing, describing her as humble, genuine, and one of the nicest people she has ever met, as reported by Fox News.

Beverly Vance discussed Usha during an appearance on Tomi Lahren’s show, “Tomi Lahren is Fearless,” after the conversation turned to an $8 Old Navy maternity dress Usha recently wore during a public appearance.

Usha Vance, who is married to Vice President JD Vance, has faced attention online over the inexpensive dress.

The maternity dress, which was originally sold at a higher price, was purchased for $8.75 after discounts and promotions, according to reporting about the purchase.

Usha later shared her receipt and joked about the attention surrounding the outfit.

Beverly Vance said the discussion of the dress was an opportunity to explain what she thinks of her daughter-in-law personally.

“She’s very humble,” Beverly revealed to Lahren.

“I think she’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met… I love her like she’s my own daughter.”

Beverly continued by describing Usha as authentic and emphasizing her relationship with JD Vance and her role as a mother.

“She’s very genuine, very authentic. She loves JD. She’s a good mom. I can’t think of anything bad to say about her.”

The comments came as Usha has received renewed public attention because of her appearances alongside her husband and her role as second lady of the United States.

The Old Navy dress became a subject of broader discussion in June after New York Times fashion critic Vanessa Friedman wrote about pregnancy and fashion among prominent women connected to President Donald Trump’s administration. Usha was among the women discussed in the article.

Usha responded publicly after the article drew attention to the dress. On June 24, she posted about the $8.75 purchase and questioned the political significance attributed to her clothing.

“Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks!”

She then added, “In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and a good story with your kids on Storytime with the Second Lady.”

Usha also posted a photograph of the receipt for the dress. Reports on the purchase said the dress originally retailed for substantially more than the amount she ultimately paid after discounts.

The item subsequently attracted considerable attention online and was reported as sold out.

The dress discussion has been one of several instances in which Usha Vance’s clothing and public appearances have drawn media attention.

Her public profile has increased since JD Vance became vice president, with the couple appearing at political events, official functions and other public engagements.

Beverly Vance has also appeared publicly with her son. In April 2025, she joined JD Vance at the White House as he celebrated her decade of sobriety.

A White House photograph from the event showed the vice president with his mother.

The relationship between Beverly and Usha has also received attention because of the Vance family’s multicultural background.

Usha Vance is of Indian heritage, and Beverly said during her interview that she enjoys Indian food despite acknowledging that she does not think she could cook it herself.

“I have to admit, I don’t think I could cook it,” she said. “But it’s pretty good.”

Usha and JD Vance have four children. Usha has spoken publicly about motherhood and the challenge of balancing family life with the demands that come with her husband’s political career.

The second lady has also faced criticism over other aspects of her public appearances and political role. She has responded to some of that attention directly, including the discussion surrounding her maternity clothing.

For Beverly Vance, however, the focus remains on her personal relationship with her daughter-in-law.

Her comments to Lahren offered an unequivocal assessment of Usha, whom she described as someone she considers part of the family rather than simply her son’s wife.

The interview comes as the Vance family continues to occupy a prominent place in American public life, with JD Vance serving as vice president and Usha Vance representing the White House as second lady.

While the price and style of a maternity dress may have generated an online debate, Beverly Vance made clear during the interview that her view of her daughter-in-law is based on their family relationship and her personal experience with Usha.
