We Are Always Doomed Because Scared People Demand to Be Saved

Doom is good for business. At least that’s true if you have an impressive credential.

Nothing gets people to short-circuit their critical faculties and go straight to “take my money” and “save my precious behind” faster than a coming apocalypse. That’s why an apocalypse is always just a few years away unless you give unlimited money and power to the people offering to save you.

Experience shows that if you put the apocalypse too far into the future, people lose interest. If you put it too close to the present, you get caught up in your lies, and your grift can’t continue much past the expiration date. So disaster timelines are always a few years out.

Global cooling. Global warming. Climate change. Pandemics. Overpopulation. Peak oil. Bird flu. End of democracy. White Supremacy. Fascism. Nuclear winter. Sea level rise. Wildfires. Hurricanes. 

Imagine a doomsday scenario, and it is caused by BAD PEOPLE, or bad people don’t want to hand good people the power to save us all. 

What’s striking is not that the powers that be try to use this trick on us. After all, their goal is to increase their access to resources and power, as demonstrated by the fact that they are the powers that be. They spent their lives getting where they are, and once they get there, they want more.

How many of these guys voluntarily retire and go live off their ill-gotten gains? At least for most company founders, their goals align with their customers because they got there by giving them something of value. 

That’s not true for politicians on the whole. They got there by climbing a slippery, greased pole, kicking everybody below them who wants the same money and power. You can’t even get an octogenarian Senator or Congressman to retire these days because they get high off their own power. 

What I don’t fully understand is why the same people keep falling for it, although I have my ideas. If you look at who they are, they tend to be people who are credentialed, economically comfortable, in professional jobs, or people who aspire to be those people. They want to believe because they see that the path to power and money flows through echoing the same doomsday scenarios that the people at the top promote. 

Either that, or they see themselves in those people, and rejecting their fellow Ivy Leaguers would be a class betrayal. They would be siding with the Neanderthals. 

If you look around, you will see that we have a social structure that prioritizes the concerns of the highly neurotic, and because of this, the incentive to be neurotic increases exponentially. 

While I assume most people who believe the predictions aren’t in on the grift, I have no doubt that the people modeling their behavior by copying Marshall Applewhite know exactly what they are doing. 

That’s why every year at Davos all those power players show up in their private jets, and the climate change conferences have CO2 emissions that mirror those of a small country. If you can find a climate doomer with a small carbon footprint, let me know. I am pretty sure that they are as rare as hen’s teeth. Vacationing in the Maldives is too pleasant to give up, even to prevent the apocalypse. 

The current Doomer scenario is that AI will kill us all, but all I see is that some companies with nominal values placed in the trillions of dollars haven’t invested in basic network security. Every analysis I have seen from an actual network security guy, including those involved in AI development, shows that those agents escaped from AI labs because engineers with novice-level skills deployed the security. 

History shows that selling doom is good for business, just as selling greed is good for con men. If the doom mongers were right, we’d all be dead 20 times over by now, and the earth would be a spinning ball covered by skeletons. 

Don’t fall for it.
