Jill Biden Is Flat Out Lying (Update)

Former First Lady Jill Biden has a book coming out (“View From the East Wing”) and that means she’s going to be doing a book tour of major cities as well as appearing on various media outlets to bring attention to the book in an effort to sell as many copies as possible. 

Yesterday she gave an interview to CBS Sunday Morning which will air this coming Sunday. In that interview, a snippet of which has been released, she was asked about the moment that ended Biden’s career. I think we all remember that moment from the first debate so I won’t post it here but after showing a clip of it, CBS’ Rita Braver asked Jill Biden what she was thinking at that moment. 

Former first lady Jill Biden said she was “frightened” by her husband Joe Biden’s 2024 debate performance and thought he was having a stroke.

“I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never,” Jill Biden told CBS News Sunday Morning’s Rita Braver in an interview airing Sunday on CBS. 

“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “As I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, he’s having a stroke.’ And it scared me to death.”

To put it bluntly, every bit of this is a lie. 

Oh, I’m sure she was shocked at Biden’s terrible performance that night but it wasn’t the same shock many people had because she had seen it before many, many times. In fact, anyone who had been paying close attention in 2024 had seen it many times by that point. So it’s not remotely credible that she hadn’t seen it before or since. Why is she trying to revive this lie?

Let’s just start with the obvious fact that moments after the debate ended, Jill Biden was out there spinning it as a win for her husband. If she really thought he was having a medical issue of some kind, she got over it really fast. Even CNN’s Abby Philips can see the problem.

But that’s really the least of the problems here. What’s shocking about this is that two years later Jill Biden is trying to run the playbook she and other Democrats have run with since 2020, i.e. Biden is sharp as a tack. I called it The Big Lie because it was obviously not true but the White House kept at it for years, doing their best to shame and silence anyone who pointed out the truth. 

Even so, it’s not hard to prove that Jill Biden knew because she had seen this moment.

And this one from 2022 when Joe called out for a deceased congresswoman who had died weeks earlier.

People close to the situation know she is lying but apparently still aren’t willing to say so in public, at least not under their own names.

A former senior Biden campaign advisor tells me Jill Biden’s comments are “revisionist history.”

Alex Thompson interviewed a bunch of these people for his book with Jake Tapper and those people also said this was something a lot of people around Joe Biden had seen, both before and after the debate.

And yet, from the same CBS interview which will air this coming Sunday, here’s Jill Biden doubling down on never having seen signs of his decline. CBS just released this new clip a short time ago.

Dr. Jill Biden says she never saw signs that her husband, former President Joe Biden, was facing cognitive decline as he ran for reelection, but acknowledges to Rita Braver that he was “slowing down.”

Jill Biden’s lies are disappointing but not exactly surprising. She clearly has been part of the cabal keeping this quiet for years at this point and is not willing to admit her own culpability in covering it up. What’s just as shocking though is that most of the media is still playing this game. Is this really the best CBS and Rita Braver can do? How about having a list of prepared follow-up questions and putting Jill on the spot for once. I haven’t seen the full interview but it sure looks like that didn’t happen. The clip above is the closest we’re going to get to pressing her on this issue.

As I mentioned up top, Jill Biden is doing a book tour which means she has a lot more media hits coming up where journalists will be given a chance to follow up on this. How many of them will do so? Is there anyone who is going to actually push back? 

The media is getting a chance to claw back a tiny bit of its credibility, albeit years after it matters. My guess is they still won’t take it. Jill will be allowed to trot around on TV lying to all of us once again and the media will once again give her a pass. Let’s see how it goes.

Update: Mark Halperin says the media is still engaging in a “conspiracy of silence” about Joe Biden’s condition. Halperin apparently isn’t convinced that no one outside the White House knew until the night of the debate.
