Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., is again criticizing members of his own party, saying recent victories by far-left candidates reflect what he believes is a growing shift within the Democratic Party toward socialism, as reported by Fox News.

Speaking Sunday evening, Fetterman reacted to several high-profile primary wins by progressive candidates, including members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), describing the results as evidence that the party has continued moving left.

“Big night for the dirtbag left,” Fetterman said while discussing New York’s recent primary elections, where two DSA-backed candidates secured victories.

He continued, “I’ve said the party is becoming an orgy of socialism. Clearly anti-America, anti-Western Civilization.”

Fetterman’s remarks come after a series of primary elections that have drawn national attention and intensified debate over the direction of the Democratic Party.

Among the races receiving attention was the Democratic Senate primary in Maine, where Graham Platner won the nomination despite facing scrutiny during the campaign.

Platner attracted controversy after denying knowledge of the meaning behind a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery, making off-color comments about race, and referring to himself as a “communist” in a deleted Reddit post.

In New York, Democratic Socialists of America candidates Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila-Chevalier both won Democratic primaries.

Valdez campaigned on proposals that included abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and advancing climate policies modeled after the Green New Deal.

Avila-Chevalier defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espillat, D-N.Y., who serves as chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Both candidates received support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has described himself as a socialist.

The victories have prompted criticism from Republicans, who argue the results illustrate the Democratic Party’s continued movement toward progressive policies.

Fetterman has emerged as one of the few Democratic senators publicly criticizing the party’s left flank following the elections.

During his comments, the Pennsylvania senator said some Democratic lawmakers have declined to criticize proposals advanced by progressive candidates.

“I mean, you look at some of the things that people have said. Abolish prison, abolish the border, abolish ICE, I mean these crazy people — I have colleagues in my caucus that refuse to even call this out,” Fetterman said.

His criticism extended beyond the New York races to developments in Maine.

“Between P-hustle in Maine and some of the other winners in New York, they should form their own party and run on all the things that they’ve had to delete on social media,” Fetterman said, referring to Platner.

He concluded, “That’s where our party has moved.”

Fetterman has repeatedly voiced concern in recent months about the Democratic Party’s ideological direction, particularly following a series of victories by socialist and progressive candidates in Democratic primaries.

His latest comments follow continued debate within the party over issues including immigration, law enforcement, climate policy, and the role of government.

The victories by DSA-backed candidates in New York, along with Platner’s Senate primary win in Maine, have become focal points in that discussion.

The Pennsylvania senator’s criticism also highlights an ongoing divide between moderates and the party’s progressive wing as Democrats prepare for future elections.

While many Democratic leaders have emphasized maintaining a broad coalition within the party, Fetterman argued that some of the candidates emerging from recent primaries represent positions that he believes many Democrats have been unwilling to publicly challenge.
