WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Real median household income rose 2.6% to $87,460, the highest inflation adjusted level since 1967.
  • The poverty rate fell to a record low of 10.2% in 2025, according to the Census Bureau.
  • Initial jobless claims reached 197,000, while the four week average declined to 200,000.
  • Second quarter economic growth reached 2.2%, while consumer spending increased at a 3.8% annual pace.

Americans relying solely on legacy news coverage could easily walk away with a narrative of economic failure. Yet several major indicators involving household income, poverty, employment, consumer spending, and economic growth present a far more positive picture than much of the mainstream reporting suggests.

The disconnect is especially glaring as Republicans and Democrats prepare for a November election battle over affordability. Economists Larry Kudlow and Stephen Moore argue that Republicans can win that argument despite gasoline prices hovering near $4.50 per gallon.

Kudlow and Moore highlighted income and poverty figures in an opinion piece published by The New York Post. They wrote that “median household incomes jumped to an all-time high of $87,500 in 2025, while poverty rates fell to an all-time low.”

The real median household income increased 2.6% to $87,460, its highest inflation-adjusted level since 1967. That increase hardly fits the tidy failure narrative being served to Americans who get their economic news exclusively from legacy outlets.

The poverty numbers offered another significant indicator. According to the Census Bureau, the poverty rate declined to 10.2% in 2025, marking the lowest level ever recorded.

Kudlow and Moore also pointed to historically low levels of layoffs and jobless claims. In July, jobless claims stood at 187,000, the lowest figure recorded since September 1969.

The unemployment rate currently stands at 4.2%, close to the 4.1% rate recorded in September 2024. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate was approximately 4.4% in September 2025.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics described the labor picture without the sort of panic often found in political coverage. “Little change over the month,” the agency said in a statement.

The agency added, “Both measures changed little over the month, with employment across all major industries remaining largely steady.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reported little movement in key sectors, including “construction, manufacturing, and financial activities.”

The latest jobs report showed that 29,000 jobs were added in September 2026, according to the U.S. Labor Department. That result fell below expectations, but it represents only one piece of a broader collection of economic statistics.

Initial jobless claims reached 197,000 for the week ending Sept. 26, the Labor Department reported. That was a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week, while the four-week average fell to 200,000 from 202,500.

Economic growth data also moved in a positive direction. Gross domestic product grew at a 2.2% annual rate during the second quarter of 2026, an upward revision from the Commerce Department’s initial projection of 1.5%.

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 2.2% during the second quarter of 2026. That quarter covered April, May, and June, and the figure came from the agency’s third estimate.

Consumer spending delivered another notable figure because it accounts for approximately 70% of the U.S. economy. Spending increased at a 3.8% annual pace after advancing at a 0.7% rate during the first quarter.

None of those figures erase the burden of gasoline prices near $4.50 per gallon or the September jobs number coming in below expectations. They do, however, provide economic context that has frequently been missing from mainstream reports portraying the economy largely through a failure narrative.

WATCH:

The broader data includes record household income, a record low poverty rate, historically low jobless claims, steady employment across major industries, stronger consumer spending, and an upward revision in economic growth. Those are substantial indicators for voters weighing competing arguments about affordability and the economy before November.
