Matthew McConaughey is sharing the story behind his decision to leave America for Peru during the early years of his Hollywood fame.

During an appearance on the “No Magic Pill” podcast, McConaughey revealed that just as his career began to rise, he spent twenty two days alone in Peru.

He said he made the trip to confront what he described as “demons” from his past.

The star, now fifty six, recalled a time when fame changed his sense of connection with others.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“No strangers do I meet anymore. The world is a mirror. I was questioning… which part’s real and which part’s [expletive],” he admitted.

Feeling the need to get away, McConaughey packed his journals, water, steak, and tequila before heading to a remote desert area in Peru.

“Went to a place that had no electricity in the middle of the desert where I was locked in with nothing but me and who I’ve been in my past or my diaries,” he explained.

He described the early part of the trip as difficult. “The first 12 days were wonky. And then the last 10 days were great. I was at the place long enough to go, I could live this.”

The Oscar-winning actor said the experience came with an emotional trial.

“There’s an initiation period when we go away with ourselves. Yes. Where the demons on our back, man are, are dancing and having a good time at our expense, where the guilt can get really heavy. The shame can get heavy.”

McConaughey noted that the solitude did not come naturally to him. “I do not enjoy my own company… at first,” he admitted. “For me, it’s around day 12… that’s when the breakthrough comes.”

He compared the intensity of the journey to a psychedelic experience such as ayahuasca. “We pull the parachute too early,” he said. “If it gets hot, we can handle breaking a sweat.”

McConaughey’s Hollywood career began in the early 1990s, and his breakout role came in the 1993 comedy Dazed and Confused where he played David Wooderson. Although he did not say exactly when his Peru trip happened, it likely followed that breakthrough moment.

Decades later, McConaughey has become known for his strong sense of patriotism and devotion to his Texas roots. Over the years, he has even considered a run for governor of the state. He and his wife Camila Alves live in Texas with their three children rather than Los Angeles.

In a 2025 interview with People magazine, McConaughey said about politics, “I don’t know. Like I said, it’s something I started looking into probably six years ago and something I’ve continued to study what that arena is, what it would mean, how could I be useful in it, would I be useful in it?”

He added that while politics is “not necessarily my language,” he would only pursue it if he felt truly called to do so, saying it would happen “when I would look up and see that I’m pulled into it in a way that, ‘Oh, I have to.’”

McConaughey’s time away in Peru marked a quiet turning point in his life, one that allowed him to reexamine himself at the height of new fame. He later returned to embrace both his career and his sense of home in America.
