Michelle Obama Tells People to Avoid Having Children as Divorce Buzz Grows

Rumors surrounding Barack and Michelle Obama’s marriage have dominated headlines for the past year, with increasing speculation that the couple is heading toward divorce.

Reports have claimed that the two have been living “separate lives,” fueling public curiosity about the state of their relationship.

At the same time, Michelle Obama has drawn new attention for recent remarks in which she discouraged others from having children.

Her comments have sparked fresh debate, coming as gossip about her marriage to Barack continues to spread rapidly.

During an episode of her IMO podcast, Michelle, who is 62, sat down with comedian Dave Chappelle and discussed the challenges of parenting.

In a candid exchange, she described raising children as “terrifying” and said she would advise people to stay childless.

“I tell people, it makes sense not to have kids,” Michelle said. “Absolute, complete, emotional sense. Don’t do it.”

Michelle and Barack share two daughters, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24. The former First Lady suggested that she found motherhood difficult, at least compared to how many women experience it.

In a previous interview conducted in 2024, she said that her husband’s presidency changed how she raised their daughters.

“There were some lines drawn. I had to raise them to be stand-up young people on their own, especially as the daughters of a former president,” she explained.

She added that public scrutiny created pressure, saying, “People are quick to cut a kid off if you don’t show up right and you’ve got a name behind you. You have to come correct.”

She also clarified her outlook on parenting, saying, “I never felt my job was to create mini-mes, or create people who were going to live out some brokenness in me or fill some hole or to be my friend. As my girls joke, I always said—my favorite line was, ‘I’m not one of your little friends.’”

Obama blames Trump for putting his marriage to Michelle under strain and causing the couple to have “genuine tension.”

Meanwhile, speculation about Barack and Michelle’s supposed separation has continued unabated. The rumors intensified in January of last year after Michelle missed both Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s inauguration, which Barack attended alone.

Political commentator Meghan McCain later said on Tara Palmeri’s podcast in 2025 that reputable journalists had mentioned hearing the divorce rumors were true.

“I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people,” McCain said.

“I’m not talking about TMZ, I’m not talking about Perez Hilton, although I love him, he’s my friend.” Palmeri agreed, adding that she too had heard claims the couple “live separate lives.”

Michelle launched her IMO podcast in March of last year, using it as a platform for conversations that sometimes touch on her personal life. Some pundits have suggested that she often criticizes her husband on air.

Tucker Carlson claimed that Michelle “really dislikes her husband,” while Megyn Kelly remarked that “everything Michelle says about her husband is negative.”

Kelly contrasted it with her own marriage, saying, “I almost never say negative things about Doug. He’s not perfect but when I think about him, I don’t immediately go to whatever is negative. I go to what’s positive and what I love about him.”

Despite the chatter, the Obamas have publicly denied that they are separating. Barack even appeared on Michelle’s podcast last July to address the persistent stories directly.

“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man,” Michelle said at the time. “And we’ve had some really hard times. So we had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures, and I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”

Barack added that he was disconnected from the rumors, saying, “So I don’t even know this stuff’s going on. And then somebody will mention it to me and I’m all like, ‘what are you talking about?’”

Even so, their reassurances have not silenced speculation. Michelle’s latest comments about avoiding parenthood are being read by some as another sign of strain, though she did not directly comment on her marriage during the interview.

Observers note that the Obamas have faced difficult scrutiny before, but the persistence of the gossip and Michelle’s outspoken remarks keep both their relationship and family life under the spotlight.

Whether their marriage remains as strong as they insist remains a question that only time will answer.
