Michigan Wolverines Keep Brandon McCoy Jr. After Dusty May Departure

Five-star recruit Brandon McCoy Jr. will remain with the Michigan Wolverines, sources told ESPN. His decision follows the departure of coach Dusty May, who left last month to become head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.

May guided Michigan to a national championship less than three months before taking the NBA job. Over his two seasons in Ann Arbor, he compiled a 64-13 overall record and went 33-7 in Big Ten play.

When May’s departure was announced, athletic director Warde Manuel said assistant coach Mike Boynton had been “appointed head coach in an interim capacity.”

Following the coaching change, projected starting guard Trey McKenney declared his intention to stay at Michigan. Final Four Most Outstanding Player Elliot Cadeau also confirmed he would remain with the program.

Earlier this week, incoming transfers Moustapha Thiam from Cincinnati and J.P. Estrella from Tennessee made the same decision, as did several projected role players.

McCoy, a 6-foot-4 guard from Sierra Canyon High School in California, has been described as the crown jewel of Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class. He was ranked No. 18 in the final SC Next 100 for the class of 2026 and earned McDonald’s All American honors.

He announced his commitment to Michigan at the Final Four in early April, making him May’s first five-star recruit as a head coach.

Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class includes six recruits in total. Among them are three other SC Next 100 prospects: Quinn Costello, ranked No. 28; Lincoln Cosby, ranked No. 45; and Joseph Hartman, ranked No. 91.

All three are expected to maintain their commitments to the Wolverines following May’s exit.

McCoy’s decision adds to a growing list of players who have reaffirmed their plans to stay with Michigan despite the recent coaching change.

Each of those announcements keeps the core of Michigan’s future roster together under interim coach Mike Boynton.

Sources did not indicate any further player departures or changes to the recruiting class at this time.
