Victor Davis Hanson argued that Republican anxiety over the approaching midterm elections is obscuring what he sees as a dramatic improvement in America’s global position compared with five years ago.

“We’re nine weeks from the midterm and we’re starting to see a lot of anxiety, frustration on the part of the Republicans,” Hanson said.

“They fear the historical precedent will be the same in November that the in party loses seats in the House and Senate and maybe both of them. And the left is very triumphant. And we’re getting a picture that I think is inaccurate.”

Hanson said Americans should compare current conditions with those at the beginning of former President Joe Biden’s administration, starting with the country’s neighbors.

“Our relationship with Canada is changing for the better for us. It’s changing better for Mexico,” Hanson said.

“Do they like it? No. Why don’t they like it? Because they had a pretty good deal at our expense.”

Hanson pointed to border security as another major change.

“Is the border closed? Yes. Is illegal immigration plaguing us at 10,000 to a day? No,” Hanson said.

He also highlighted developments in Venezuela, including a 100-year arrangement that he said would give the United States access to 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil.

Hanson noted that extracting Venezuela’s heavy crude remains expensive and difficult, but argued the agreement benefits both countries.

“All of South America and all of the Caribbean and all of Central America is unrecognizable from 5 years ago when Joe Biden entered office,” Hanson said.

Hanson then turned to the Middle East, focusing on Iran and its regional proxies, including the Houthis, Hamas and Hezbollah.

He credited Israel with weakening Hezbollah and argued that American economic pressure has deprived Iran and its allies of financial resources.

“We have the strictest sanctions, embargoes, that we’ve ever seen on Iran,” Hanson said.

“And as Iran as we hear is winning the war, they’re just about kaput. They’re strangled.”

Hanson said Iran’s military has been heavily degraded while its currency and energy sector face intense pressure.

He argued that time favors the United States because Iran cannot indefinitely withstand the economic restrictions.

“Maybe it’s going to be 6 weeks, maybe it’s going to be 6 months, but it cannot survive the economic sanctions that are now in place,” Hanson said.

According to Hanson, weakening Iran could also change the broader Middle East by reducing the influence of the government in Tehran and its proxies.

“The entire Middle East is starting to wake up and see that there’s a really good chance to see to go to a normal regional atmosphere without that pernicious, toxic government,” Hanson said.

Energy is another component of Hanson’s assessment.

He predicted that pipelines bypassing the Strait of Hormuz would reduce the strategic importance of the waterway and argued that America’s energy production, combined with the Venezuela agreement, could strengthen its position in global energy markets.

“And who’s going to control most of the oil in the world? The United States, because it’s got this good deal with Venezuela, and it’s already the largest producer of natural gas,” Hanson said.

Hanson also pointed to Russia and NATO. He described Russia as significantly weakened while saying NATO members are rearming at levels previously considered unlikely.

Europe’s political and economic direction, Hanson argued, is also changing.

He criticized the European Union model of open borders, low fertility, green energy policies and disarmament, predicting that political changes will spread beyond Italy and Eastern Europe.

“In other words, the socialist model has failed all over the world, and it’s starting to implode,” Hanson said.

“And it’s not gaining ground in the United States.”

Hanson said the cumulative changes leave America stronger relative to China, Russia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

“Add it all up, and the United States is in a preeminent position,” Hanson said.

“And the world today has nothing in common with the world just five years ago.”

He argued that other nations are moving closer to the United States because of American economic, military and technological strength rather than necessarily because of favorable attitudes toward Washington.

“The United States is much stronger, in a much better position than those countries and regions I just mentioned,” Hanson said.

Hanson also cited America’s position in artificial intelligence, software, space exploration, satellites and bioengineering as advantages that could determine future economic and strategic power.

“Our system is producing spectacular growth economically, militarily, socially, culturally, and more importantly, in the technologies to come in the future: AI, software, space exploration, satellites, bioengineering, we’re preeminent,” Hanson said.

With the midterms approaching, Hanson rejected the idea that the United States should view its current position primarily through the lens of crisis or decline.

“So do not listen, before these midterms, that we’re in crisis, the loss of war,” Hanson said.

“We’re in the eye of the hurricane, but the storm is passing, and it’s going to be very advantageous for the United States in the next decade.”
