Miss Jamaica Sues Miss Universe After Nightmare Stage Plunge Causes Brain Injury [WATCH]

Miss Jamaica Gabrielle Henry is suing the Miss Universe organization after a stage fall that she says caused a severe brain injury and permanently changed her life, as reported by The New York Post.

The doctor filed the lawsuit Monday in Delaware Superior Court, nearly a year after the incident during the Miss Universe preliminary rounds in Thailand.

According to the lawsuit obtained by People, Henry was crossing the stage when “intense lighting” blinded her.

She then fell into an “unmarked and uncovered opening in the stage” that was about five feet deep in November 2025.

The opening contained concrete and lighting equipment, and the impact left Henry unconscious, according to the suit. Her traumatic brain injury included multiple brain bleeds.

The complaint centers on the condition of the opening and the absence of protections around it. Henry alleges the hazard remained uncovered as she moved across the stage.

“I fell into an unguarded hole, sustaining a traumatic brain injury that permanently altered the course of my life. All at once, a beautiful moment became a shattered dream,” Henry wrote in an essay published Wednesday.

“Recovery from a traumatic brain injury is difficult to describe. It feels as though you’ve had an out-of-body experience and returned to one that is not your own,” she added.

Henry spent months in hospitals in Bangkok and Jamaica, with her stays stretching from November 2025 through March 2026. Her treatment followed what had begun as a pageant appearance in Thailand.

She said the injuries prevented her from completing her residency and derailed her career in ophthalmology. The consequences therefore extended well beyond the pageant stage and into her professional life.

“As an ophthalmologist, being in the hospital was also a particularly painful reminder of what I had lost on the way down during my fall,” she wrote.

“I’ve transformed from student to doctor to patient, and I am trying to move forward again by continuing my career on a modified schedule and with my providers on speed dial.” Her account described an attempt to resume her career while continuing to rely closely on medical providers.

The lawsuit accuses Miss Universe and Thai pageant producer Miss Grand International of negligence, premises liability, and infliction of emotional distress.

Henry alleges the opening in the stage was not properly protected.

“This opening was not barricaded, illuminated, nor did it have a sign,” the lawsuit states. Those allegations directly challenge whether basic warnings or barriers were present around the opening.

The complaint also says there were no safety markers during rehearsals or the live broadcast, even though contestants had raised concerns. Henry’s filing focuses heavily on those alleged failures.

Miss Universe officials initially described Henry’s injuries as “a couple of minor wounds.” That description came before a notably different acknowledgment from the organization.

Weeks later, Miss Universe referred to the incident as a “serious fall” that caused “significant injuries.” The organization also said it took “full and immediate responsibility without hesitation.”

That responsibility included paying Henry’s medical bills, according to the organization. Its later statement contrasted sharply with the initial description of only minor wounds.

Henry made her first public appearance after the fall at an Atlanta charity event in May, where she was seated in a chair. In August, she returned to the stage to crown her successor, Miss Jamaica 2026 Nevaeh Allen.

“As pageant queens, we are tasked with lifting others up. Throughout my journey, I learned to let others do the lifting,” Henry wrote in her essay.

“I continue to stand firm in my belief that the true reason for my fall, the meaning behind it all, will reveal itself somehow.”

Her lawsuit now puts the alleged stage conditions and the lasting consequences of the fall before Delaware Superior Court.
