A woman identified as a sister-in-law of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney left a suicide note before dying in a fall from a parking garage in Southern California, according to a report citing official findings and surveillance evidence, as reported by The New York Post.

Carrie Elizabeth Romney, 64, died after falling from the roof of a five-story parking garage near an apartment complex in Santa Clarita, the Daily Mail reported.

Authorities said she fell “backwards from a seated position,” according to the outlet’s review of the investigation.

Surveillance footage from the garage reportedly showed Carrie Romney pacing on the rooftop for an “extended period of time” before the fall.

Investigators also located a note inside her vehicle, which was parked at the scene, according to the report.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled her death a suicide caused by blunt-force injuries sustained in the fall. The medical examiner’s report concluded there was no evidence of foul play.

A toxicology screening conducted as part of the autopsy showed Carrie Romney tested positive for benzodiazepine alprazolam, a prescription medication commonly used to treat anxiety disorders, according to the Daily Mail.

No additional substances were cited in the report.

Carrie Romney was married to George Scott Romney, 81, the older brother of Mitt Romney. Court records reviewed by the outlet show the couple had been engaged in divorce proceedings in the months leading up to her death.

The divorce filing cited “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the split after eight years of marriage.

According to court documents, both parties sought to block the other from receiving marital assets during the proceedings, signaling a contentious legal dispute.

The couple’s divorce had not been finalized at the time of Carrie Romney’s death.

There has been no indication from authorities that the divorce proceedings themselves were directly connected to the incident, beyond being part of the broader personal circumstances surrounding the case.

Local law enforcement responded to the scene after reports of a woman falling from the parking structure. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the location. Officials have not released additional details regarding the contents of the note found in her car.

The case drew national attention due to the Romney family’s prominence in American politics. Mitt Romney previously served as governor of Massachusetts and was the Republican nominee for president in 2012.

He has since remained a high-profile national political figure.

Authorities emphasized that the findings were based on physical evidence, surveillance footage, and medical examination results. No criminal investigation remains open in the case, according to available information.
