Musk Predicts Billion Robot Army Will Outproduce All Humanity Within a Decade [WATCH]

Elon Musk offered a series of predictions about artificial intelligence, humanoid robots, energy demands, and government regulation during a virtual G20 session Wednesday, including a forecast that more than 1 billion humanoid robots could be operating within the next decade, as reported by Breitbart.

Musk said he believes that number of robots, combined with significant advances in their capabilities, could eventually allow the machines to produce more than the entire human population.

According to CNBC, Musk addressed four major areas during the session: the limitations created by energy demands for artificial intelligence, AI’s potential economic impact, the development of humanoid robots and the question of how governments should regulate emerging technologies.

Musk provided a more detailed explanation of what he believes will drive advances in humanoid robotics.

He described the technology as depending on three primary components: AI software, the AI chip inside the robot, and electromechanical dexterity, particularly the ability of robotic hands to perform physical tasks.

According to Musk, all three areas are improving at an exponential rate.

He also predicted that the development of robots capable of manufacturing additional robots could accelerate the industry’s growth.

Once robots can build other robots, he said, production could initially develop slowly before expanding at a much faster rate.

Musk described his projection of more than 1 billion humanoid robots within 10 years as a conservative estimate.

He said each robot could ultimately be about five times as productive as an individual human worker.

If those projections are realized, Musk said the combined productivity of such a fleet would exceed the output of humanity.

He argued that the physical economy could ultimately produce an even larger increase in overall economic output than the digital economy.

Energy availability, however, remains a major issue for the continued expansion of AI, according to Musk.

He cited a consensus estimate that AI chips could face an electricity shortfall of at least 15 gigawatts by 2027.

Musk said AI chip production is increasing by approximately 40% to 50% annually, while power generation outside China is growing at a significantly slower rate of about 10% to 20% per year.

Musk argued that the difference between those growth rates could become the primary constraint on AI development.

He said companies including Google and Anthropic are leasing computing capacity from SpaceX, which has built its own power plants to bring additional capacity online quickly.

China, Musk noted, has access to abundant electricity but faces restrictions on importing the newest AI chips because of GPU export bans.

His recommendation for other nations was to expand electricity generation, build AI data centers, and then tax the facilities or charge fees for their use.

Musk also put a figure on AI’s potential economic impact.

He predicted that digital artificial intelligence alone could eventually increase the global economy by between 20% and 30%, which he estimated would amount to approximately $20 trillion to $30 trillion annually.

He predicted that by the end of next year, AI should be capable of handling any digital task that does not require physically manipulating atoms by hand.

Musk also offered a timeline for AI’s progress in software development and other digital fields.

He predicted that AI could reach “Stockfish-level” capabilities within roughly 12 to 18 months, referring to the chess engine and mentioning five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen.

Musk said that same general timeframe could apply to AI becoming highly capable in engineering and other forms of digital work.

During the discussion, Musk also promoted X, the social media platform he owns, saying that nearly all serious discussions about AI take place there.

On government regulation, Musk argued that new technologies should generally be considered legal unless there is a specific reason to prohibit them.

He pointed to the European Union as an example of a regulatory system he believes can slow technological development without stopping it entirely.

Musk used an image of young saplings growing alongside large trees to describe the relationship between startups and established corporations.

He argued that governments frequently provide greater support and access to large, established companies while startups struggle to receive similar attention.

According to Musk, major companies have greater access to political leaders than young companies typically do.

He argued that government policy should therefore be deliberately tilted toward startups to help offset that advantage.

Musk’s latest predictions follow previous comments about the potential impact of AI on employment, retirement savings and the broader economy.

Breitbart News previously reported on Musk’s appearance on the Moonshots with Peter Diamandis podcast, where he discussed the possibility that traditional retirement savings could become less important as AI changes the economy.

“Don’t worry about squirreling money away for retirement in 10 or 20 years. It won’t matter.”

Musk has also previously predicted that AI and robots could eventually make work “optional” and more comparable to a hobby.

His latest G20 remarks offer another look at the future Musk expects as artificial intelligence and robotics continue developing, with energy infrastructure, regulation and access to advanced computing resources remaining central issues in the race to expand the technology.
