Texas Tech’s attempt to have quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility reinstated has been rejected by the NCAA, according to multiple reports released Friday.

The decision follows Sorsby being declared ineligible after he acknowledged gambling on sports, including wagers involving his own team while at Indiana.

The NCAA’s denial of Texas Tech’s appeal is separate from Sorsby’s ongoing lawsuit filed against the association.

Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech in January after leaving Cincinnati, where he was the starter in 2024 and 2025. Before joining Cincinnati, he played at Indiana for two seasons.

While the NCAA announced its decision, both the association and Sorsby continued to await a ruling from a Texas judge. The quarterback filed a lawsuit May 18 seeking a temporary injunction that would allow him to play this season for the Red Raiders.

The court hearing related to that filing took place Monday, lasting two hours in the 99th District Court in Lubbock County, where Texas Tech is based.

As of Friday, Judge Ken Curry had not yet issued a decision in the case.

Texas Tech confirmed on May 26 that it had submitted an appeal after the NCAA rejected the university’s earlier petition to have Sorsby reinstated.

In a message to the Texas Tech community at that time, university president Lawrence Schovanec wrote that the school believed “the NCAA’s ruling should be reversed or modified.”

The school had originally ruled Sorsby ineligible on May 18, coinciding with the day his lawsuit was filed. That step was required before Texas Tech could request reinstatement from the NCAA.

The request for reinstatement was officially submitted May 19 but denied three days later, on May 22.
