Patrick Kane Rejoins Blackhawks on 2-Year Deal

The Chicago Blackhawks announced Wednesday that free agent winger Patrick Kane has agreed to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $8 million against the NHL salary cap. The deal marks a return for Kane, who previously spent 16 seasons with the team.

Kane, 37, returns to the organization where he became a superstar. He was drafted first overall by the Blackhawks in 2007 and went on to win three Stanley Cups while serving as the cornerstone of a team that made the playoffs nine straight seasons and reached the conference finals five times.

Over his career with the Blackhawks, Kane ranks second all-time in points with 1,225, trailing only Stan Mikita, who recorded 1,467 points. He is also third in goals with 446 and third in games played with 1,161 for the Original Six franchise.

Kane’s resume with Chicago includes several major awards. He won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year for the 2007-08 season, the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2013, and both the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award in 2015-16, when he led the NHL with 106 points.

He added, “He’s shown on countless occasions that he knows what it takes to win at the highest levels, and we couldn’t be prouder for Patrick to once again call the United Center home and continue to shine in Chicago’s brightest lights.”

Kane’s return follows a period away from Chicago. He was traded to the New York Rangers in 2023 as the Blackhawks entered a rebuild, and afterward signed three one-year contracts with the Detroit Red Wings. Last season with Detroit, Kane tallied 16 goals and 41 assists over 67 games before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Reports indicated that Kane was considering a return to the Blackhawks or a move to his hometown team, the Buffalo Sabres. Ultimately, he chose to rejoin Chicago.

Connor Bedard, 21, had been vocal about wanting to see Kane back in a Blackhawks sweater. The young star, drafted first overall by the team a few months after Kane’s 2023 trade, never had the opportunity to play with him until now.

Bedard had previously said it would be “incredible” to have Kane back in Chicago. “I can’t imagine his first game back at the [United Center], just the reaction he’d get and how much juice that would bring not only to our team but our fans as well. That would be incredible to get to play with him and learn from him,” Bedard said. He recently signed a five-year, $75 million extension as a restricted free agent.

Kane’s return to the Blackhawks also coincides with a milestone in his career. He is entering his 20th NHL season, ranking fourth among active players with 1,400 points and sixth with 508 goals.

The reunion between Kane and Chicago brings back one of the franchise’s celebrated figures. During his previous tenure, Kane helped define an era of success for the team, which included multiple championships and individual accolades.
