Philadelphia 76ers Reportedly Pursue LeBron James After Landing Jaylen Brown

The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly joined the pursuit of free agent LeBron James, a day after acquiring Jaylen Brown in a major trade, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

League sources told Charania on Thursday that the 76ers are attempting to pitch James following their blockbuster move for Brown. James, who is an unrestricted free agent, is expected to take his time before deciding on his next destination to continue his historic 23-year career.

Other known suitors for James include the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Heat. Each team is exploring potential avenues to add the veteran star, sources said.

Philadelphia’s trade involved sending Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Brown. Sources told Charania that Brown, who is 29, finished sixth in MVP voting this past season.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists over 71 games last season, making him one of the most productive wings in the league during that stretch.

Earlier on Thursday morning, the 76ers also agreed to terms with scoring guard Anfernee Simons in free agency. The combination of adding Brown and Simons represents the type of roster reinforcement that could appeal to James.

According to the report, James has expressed that happiness and a legitimate chance to win at the highest level are priorities in selecting his next team. That stance adds intrigue to how the 76ers’ recent moves might influence his thinking.

The Warriors, one of the teams on James’s short list, have reportedly received indications from him that they remain under consideration, though team sources have suggested they may not currently sit atop that list as he surveys the landscape.

Golden State can still create enough financial space to offer James the $15.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception. However, team sources told Charania that completing such a move would be complicated by recent signings, including Kristaps Porzingis and De’Anthony Melton.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers could need to clear midtier contracts to make room for James. Sources specifically mentioned the deals of Max Strus and Dennis Schroder as examples of salaries that might need to be offloaded to open flexibility.

Philadelphia’s financial outlook is tighter. At present, the 76ers are only able to offer James the veteran minimum, which is approximately $3.9 million.

The developments mark a sudden shift in the 76ers’ offseason activity following their bold decision to part with George and four draft picks for Brown. According to reports, that deal was finalized on Wednesday.

As the market for James unfolds, several teams continue strategizing to structure competitive offers within the salary cap restrictions, each hoping to secure the long-tenured forward.

Charania reported that James’s decision process is ongoing, with no indication of an imminent choice or commitment as he evaluates available destinations.

Among those actively vying for his services, sources cited the 76ers’ recent additions as potentially meaningful in shaping their appeal. Both the franchise’s roster construction and financial limitations remain central factors in their pursuit.

James’s free agency continues to attract attention across the NBA landscape, and those close to the situation say all interested teams remain engaged in discussions or background planning as they await his next move.
