Rob Reiner’s Son Battles Trustee for $1.5M Inheritance While on Trial for Killing Parents

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, is seeking access to $750,000 from his $1.5 million trust fund while he awaits trial for allegedly killing his parents in their Los Angeles mansion, as reported by The New York Post.

According to court filings, Reiner claims the trustee, lawyer Paul Kanin, has refused to distribute the funds based on “unsubstantiated ‘concerns’ about Nick’s so-called competence to ‘manage a trust.’”

The trust, created by Rob and Michele, stipulates that Nick would receive half the funds at age 30 and the rest at 35.

Reiner is currently accused of fatally stabbing both parents inside their $20 million Brentwood home on December 14. He was arrested the following day and now faces two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders.

In the new petition obtained by Daily Mail, Reiner argues that the trustee’s refusal to release funds is jeopardizing his ability to mount a defense. He says he has no other means to pay his mounting legal expenses.

Before the dispute, Reiner had retained prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson to represent him. However, Jackson withdrew when Kanin declined to provide the requested funds, leaving Reiner reliant on a public defender.

His new legal team insists that any delay in releasing the money could harm his defense. “Time is of the essence,” the petition reads, arguing that each week of withholding “further jeopardizes my defense in the criminal matter.”

The filing continues, emphasizing, “Every additional week of delay is a week in which the counsel of his choice cannot investigate or prepare on his behalf — prejudice to his defense that cannot be undone.”

The lawyers also describe the resulting harm as “irreparable” and say it grows “with each day the Trustee withholds funds that are already Nick’s.”

The petition further claims that Kanin has used trust funds to pay additional lawyers to justify retaining the money.

“For reasons unknown to Petitioner, the Trustee continues to deplete Nick’s funds by paying lawyers to raise one reason after another for holding on to Nick’s money for another two years, all of which violate the plain terms of the Trust,” the filing states.

Court documents do not specify whether the trustee has responded publicly to these allegations.

Nick Reiner’s troubled past with substance abuse and mental health problems has been noted in several legal and media accounts, but the focus now rests on the ongoing murder case and financial battle.
