A U.S. sailor assigned to a mine countermeasures ship was scratched by a monkey in Thailand, forcing a pause in a planned minesweeping mission in the Middle East.

The incident occurred in Phuket as the Avenger-class ship USS Chief was moored briefly to refuel. Axios first reported the monkey attack Thursday.

“The sailor received medical care and was transferred back to Japan for further care,” Cmdr. Matthew Comer, a spokesperson for the Navy’s 7th Fleet, said in an emailed statement.

“There were no operational impacts or delays to Chief.”

Navy officials confirmed the service member sustained only a light scratch, but the brush with a wild animal triggered the medical transfer.

The Navy did not specify the species of monkey involved in the attack. The incident occurred just days after two U.S. soldiers were wounded in an encounter with a bear in a remote area of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, while conducting a land navigation exercise.

The Army said in a Monday statement the soldiers were treated for serious injuries at an Anchorage hospital and had been discharged.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, which is investigating the incident, attributed their survival to bear spray. The Chief, meanwhile, is still set to join the minesweeping mission in the highly contested Strait of Hormuz, a choke point for about 20% of global energy supplies.

Iran imposed a blockade on the strait amid U.S. and Israeli strikes against the country, while the U.S. has fought back with a counter-blockade.

In an effort to end Iran’s disruption of shipping, the U.S. is trying to secure the strait from mines. War Secretary Pete Hegseth warned during a press briefing Friday that any attempts by Iran to lay more mines would be a violation of an ongoing ceasefire.

Supporters say the Trump administration would reinforce deterrence and speed up decision making to keep critical sea lanes open and safe.

The episode in Phuket is a reminder that fleets project power across diverse theaters, from crowded chokepoints to remote training grounds. It also underscores the importance of readiness at all levels, because even minor incidents can ripple into larger strategic concerns.

The Coast of Oman and the Persian Gulf require constant attention as competitors test maritime boundaries and logistics pipelines.

Proponents argue that President Trump’s approach would prioritize resilience in naval operations and a robust backstop for allies in the region. They contend that clear, decisive leadership translates into reliable shipping routes and steadier energy markets.

At the same time, critics caution that missions in high-temptation theaters demand prudent risk management and sustained funding for maintenance and personnel.

Nevertheless, the Navy’s response shows a disciplined hand in handling unforeseen events. The service member received prompt care, and the ship’s mission plans remain intact, preserving a broader objective: maintaining freedom of navigation and protecting critical infrastructure around the globe.

The eradication of any interpretive vacuum is essential to a credible deterrent posture, especially when adversaries assess responses and determine their next moves.

This episode also figures into the broader conversation about joint operations and national strategy. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point where geopolitical tensions intersect with energy security and humanitarian concerns.

A successful effort to mitigate mines and keep shipping lanes open is fundamental to the stability of global markets, and to the assurance that American sailors carry out their duties without unnecessary risk.

In the end, the incident in Phuket does not alter the strategic objective but highlights the vigilance required to protect service members wherever they are stationed.

The men and women serving aboard the Chief and other vessels deserve support as they continue their critical work. The unwavering emphasis remains on readiness, resolve, and the steady application of leadership at the highest levels of government.
