“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday, 13th July, in Sydney, Australia,” his family wrote.

The statement described Neill’s death as both sudden and unexpected, but noted the family found comfort in the fact that he had remained free of cancer.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free,” they added.

His family also said he “passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” emphasizing the grace with which he had always carried himself.

Neill, who was best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, had previously shared that he had been diagnosed with stage-three blood cancer.
