Markwayne Mullin addressed questions about an executive order signed by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger that restricts state law enforcement from working with federal immigration authorities, arguing that cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is necessary for public safety and enforcement of immigration laws.
The issue arose after Spanberger, on her first day in office, signed an executive order preventing state law enforcement agencies from participating in certain enforcement activities alongside ICE.
Under the previous administration, state troopers had participated in field enforcement missions with federal agents, a practice that has since ended.
A reporter asked Mullin directly about the policy shift and whether the governor should reconsider the decision.

“Governor Abigail Spanberger, as you said, on her first day in office, she signed an executive order not to allow state law enforcement to work with ICE under the previous governor. You actually saw state troopers go on missions with ICE agents doing field enforcement. We don’t see that anymore. Do you think she needs to reverse course?”
Mullin responded by stating that he believes the policy should be reversed and pointed to examples of cooperation in other parts of the country.
“Yes, absolutely. We see this in states that are cooperating with keep in mind, seven of the safest cities, seven out of the top 10, safest cities in the country, cooperate with ICE, and I use Oklahoma, for example.”
He cited Oklahoma as a state that maintains ongoing coordination with federal immigration enforcement.

“Oklahoma cooperates every day with ICE enforcement. We’re not having these issues on the streets in Oklahoma City or the streets in Tulsa.”
Mullin emphasized the role of partnerships between local law enforcement and federal agencies, saying that coordination is important for maintaining safety and enforcing immigration laws.
“We want to have good partnerships. But I mean, when you have the governor on day one sign an executive order that does away with the 287(g) program that allows us to cooperate with local law enforcement and enforce immigration laws and get the worst, the worst off the streets.”
He added that cooperation between different levels of law enforcement is necessary regardless of political differences between states.
“We want to do that. We want to be we want to cooperate with you. We want to have, have have a good working relationship.”
Mullin also addressed his broader responsibilities, stating that his focus is on national security and enforcing existing laws.
“And I got sworn in, I made it very clear I don’t I’m not looking at a red state or blue state any different. But I have a job, and it’s protect the homeland as a whole, and I take that job very seriously.”
