Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham joined the growing number of celebrities and fans paying tribute to Dolly Parton this week, sharing a cheeky quote from the country music icon as fall-themed marketing began appearing well before Labor Day, as reported by Fox News.

Cunningham, who has remained active on social media throughout the WNBA season, posted a Dolly Parton quote with a caption that quickly drew attention.

“My weaknesses have always been food and men — in that order.” Dolly Parton

The post came as the annual rush to promote pumpkin-flavored drinks and other fall products was already underway on Aug. 27, despite summer not yet reaching Labor Day weekend.

Dunkin had already rolled out its fall menu at locations in Florida, including pumpkin-flavored coffee offerings and promotional displays featuring influencer Alix Earle.

The early arrival of fall marketing has become a familiar part of the late-August calendar as coffee chains and retailers begin pushing seasonal products weeks before the traditional start of autumn.

The timing has sparked the usual debate among consumers over exactly when summer ends and fall begins. Some businesses have clearly settled on their own answer: whenever pumpkin products can start selling.

Cunningham’s Dolly Parton post was one of several subjects featured in a sports and culture roundup that also touched on college football, fan reactions and debates surrounding former athletes returning to their previous teams.

Cunningham, No. 8 for the Indiana Fever, was photographed during the team’s Aug. 11 game against the New York Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The article also turned to college football as the season approached, with North Carolina scheduled to face TCU in Dublin as the sport prepared for the return of regular-season action.

Another topic was the Los Angeles Angels, whose Aug. 26 game against the Cleveland Guardians at Angel Stadium of Anaheim drew attention because of the visible number of empty seats.

The official box score listed attendance at more than 25,000, while the temperature in Anaheim reached 92 degrees and some spectators moved to shadier areas of the stadium.

The discussion then shifted to the question of whether former players should be booed when returning to face their old teams.

Miami Dolphins fans were preparing for the return of Tua Tagovailoa, who was expected to come back as the preseason starter for the Atlanta Falcons.

The prospect of his return prompted debate among fans about how former players should be received after leaving a franchise.

The article also referenced fan reactions to some of the most difficult moments in sports history, with readers sharing memories involving the Buffalo Bills, New York Knicks, New York Mets, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, and Syracuse basketball.

Among the events mentioned were the Buffalo Bills’ “Wide Right” loss, the Music City Miracle, the 2006 National League Championship Series, and other memorable playoff defeats.

For Cunningham, however, the social media spotlight centered on a much lighter subject: a tribute to Dolly Parton and a quote that fit neatly into the late-summer conversation surrounding food, fall marketing, and the annual arrival of pumpkin season.

With Labor Day still days away, one thing was already clear: retailers may be ready for fall, whether everyone else is or not.
