Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent drew applause Wednesday as he addressed the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, using his appearance to promote President Donald Trump’s economic policies while drawing a sharp contrast with former President Joe Biden and Democratic policies.

Bessent framed the administration’s economic agenda around working Americans and argued that Trump has made American families a priority.

“Our obligation begins by making this country work again for the very people who sustain it […] No one works harder for YOU, no one fights harder for you, and no president has asked his team and of himself to put American families BACK at the center of the American economy — than DONALD J TRUMP!” Bessent said.

The Treasury secretary also targeted Biden while describing what he viewed as a dramatic change since Trump returned to the White House.

“In 15 months, we’ve gone from autopen to overdrive,” Bessent said.

“From a president who couldn’t stay awake to a president who refuses to sleep.”

Bessent then turned to the administration’s broader economic record, pointing to taxes, trade, energy and Trump accounts as examples of policies he said were benefiting Americans.

“Across this country, President Trump’s policies are reaching the very people they were designed to serve. He signed the largest tax cuts in history, rebalanced trade in favor of our working families, reclaimed our position as the world’s energy superpower. And where his predecessors created debt and dependency, this president is creating assets and expanding ownership through Trump accounts.”

His remarks came after an August jobs report showing 162,000 new jobs, along with an increase in private-sector employment while federal government employment was being reduced.

Bessent used another portion of his address to attack policies associated with the political left, arguing that socialist ideas being promoted in the United States resembled policies that had previously failed elsewhere.

He said the objective was “to remake America” by importing policies associated with socialist governments of the past.

“To import the misery of failed workers’ paradises like the Soviet bloc, Caracas, and Havana, to repackage the discredited ideals of the past as the moral cause of the future,” Bessent said.

According to Bessent, expanding government programs along those lines would ultimately produce the same problems he said had accompanied similar policies elsewhere.

“Their big government giveaways would end as they always do, always do, food shortages, deadly delays in medical care, and squalid housing,” Bessent said.

California became one of Bessent’s examples as he criticized Democratic economic policies.

The Treasury secretary singled out California Gov. Gavin Newsom and gave him a nickname while discussing taxpayers leaving the state.

“Exhibit A is Sparkle Beach Ken’s California, from which a taxpayer flees every 2.5 minutes!” Bessent said.

The appearance placed economic policy at the center of Bessent’s message to Republicans gathered in Dallas.

He contrasted what he described as the Trump administration’s focus on private-sector growth, energy production, trade and ownership with the approach taken under Biden and with policies advocated by the left.

Bessent also emphasized what he characterized as the administration’s responsibility to make the economy work for the Americans supporting it.

His remarks repeatedly returned to Trump’s economic agenda and the differences he sees between the current administration and its predecessor.

The Treasury secretary’s criticism of Biden was among the sharper moments of his address, particularly his comparison between the former president and Trump.

Bessent’s comments about California extended that argument to the state level, with Newsom serving as his example of where he believes Democratic economic policies can lead.

Throughout the address, Bessent presented the choice in economic terms, focusing on government spending, private-sector employment, taxes, trade, energy and individual ownership.

His remarks also reflected the broader focus of the Republican gathering in Dallas, where the party assembled ahead of the midterm elections with Trump and his administration’s record at the center of the event. (Roll Call)
