Wild scenes from across New York City showed streets nearly transformed into raging rivers after powerful storms dumped torrents of rain on the region.

Floodwater swallowed roadways, stranded motorists, and turned an ordinary Thursday commute into a chaotic test of patience and survival, as reported by The New York Post.

Queens and Brooklyn were among the hardest-hit areas Thursday evening as scores of commuters became trapped in heavy congestion.

Parts of Long Island recorded 2.87 inches of rain during the deluge, according to Pix11.

Traffic backed up in long rows along the Long Island Expressway while water spread across the heavily traveled route.

FDNY personnel were seen wading through ankle-deep water on the freeway as crews confronted the fast-developing emergency.

New York City Emergency Management announced shortly before 7:30 p.m. that the Long Island Expressway had been closed in both directions at Francis Lewis Boulevard.

Drivers were advised to seek alternative routes while authorities dealt with the flooding and resulting traffic nightmare.

Images from the roadway captured lines of vehicles sitting helplessly as water continued rising around them.

What began as another unpleasant New York commute quickly became a grim reminder that even one of the nation’s busiest cities can be brought to a crawl by a concentrated burst of rain.

On 188th Street, one driver was seen desperately trying to push a stalled gray Mercedes through the floodwater.

The effort appeared to capture the frustration facing motorists who suddenly found themselves stuck in water with nowhere safe to go.

Conditions in Brooklyn looked especially ferocious as runoff rushed through neighborhood streets.

Some people climbed onto the roofs of their vehicles simply to keep their feet dry while they waited for the water to recede or rescuers to arrive.

In Bushwick, storm drains were overwhelmed by the intense volume of rain that fell within minutes.

The drainage system could not keep pace, leaving streets covered as the downpour rapidly converted familiar blocks into murky channels.

The dangerous weather did not stop at New York’s borders. Across the Hudson River in Newark, New Jersey, one stranded motorist had to be pulled to safety aboard a life raft, according to video viewed by Freedom News.

Other people in Newark were seen moving carefully through water that reached their knees.

Some made their way toward a nearby tree so they could hold on, a startling scene that showed just how quickly the flooding became hazardous.

Forecasters had issued a level 3 out of 4 flash flood risk for central and northern New Jersey as well as New York City on Thursday afternoon.

That elevated warning reflected the potential for intense rainfall to overwhelm roads, drainage systems, and low-lying areas.

A tornado watch was also placed into effect for more than 15 million people across a broad section of the region.

The watch covered areas in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Virginia as the turbulent weather moved through.

The storm disrupted subway travel into early Friday, affecting commuters using the A, C, and E services.

I’ve never seen flooding THIS OFTEN in my life. Streets turning into rivers, roads and subway stations underwater—and somehow the media barely says a word.

Those delays were later resolved, allowing service to return to normal after another round of weather-driven headaches for New Yorkers.

The flooding offered a vivid demonstration of how quickly severe weather can paralyze crucial transportation arteries.

Closed expressways, stalled vehicles, and delayed subway lines left residents scrambling while emergency crews worked through deep water and difficult conditions.

By Friday, the most immediate transit disruptions had eased, but the dramatic images remained.

Cars sat surrounded by floodwater, residents sought higher ground, and first responders waded into the mess as New York and New Jersey absorbed the full force of a sudden summer deluge.
